🎉LAST, BUT MOST DEFINITELY NOT LEAST… MEET SANDY INFIELD! 🎉 On the eve of the inaugural Ashdown Forest Open Studios, allow me to introduce our esteemed leader, chief organiser and the driving force behind Ashdown Forest Open Studios! Over the past year, Sandy has worked tirelessly to transform Crowborough Open Studios into Ashdown Forest Open Studios, taking the event out across the Forest and bringing together an incredible community of artists and makers. From finding artists and discovering new venues to securing funding and somehow keeping the whole adventure moving forwards, Sandy’s vision — and seemingly endless optimism! — has been at the heart of it all. Of course, an event of this size takes a team. Sandy has brought together a wonderful group of artists who have taken on everything from the finances and website to marketing, social media and all the practical bits behind the scenes. But without Sandy having the vision in the first place — and the determination to make it happen — Ashdown Forest Open Studios simply wouldn’t be here. And amongst all that organising, she’s somehow managed to find time to be an artist too! You’ll find Sandy exhibiting her own work at Studio 12 in Fairwarp, alongside a fantastic collection of artists and makers, so make sure you add it to your itinerary. 📅 4th–6th September ⏰ 10am–5pm Come and see Sandy’s work, explore everything Studio 12 has to offer and, if you spot her, perhaps say a very well-deserved thank you for making all of this happen! #AshdownForestOpenStudios #AshdownForest #openstudios2026 #meetthesussexartist #livingthecreativedream by @sandyinfield

Meet the artists and makers of Studio 12! Painting, jewellery, ceramics, sculpture and wonderfully imaginative creations from reclaimed materials — Studio 12 brings together nine artists and a whole host of different ways of responding to nature, materials and memories. SANDY INFIELD Inspired by her Ashdown Forest surroundings, Sandy uses colour and composition to create distinctive images celebrating nature, from its smallest details to the sweeping landscapes of the Forest and Downs. #AshdownForestOpenStudios #AshdownForest #meetthesussexartist #openstudios2026 #artforsalesussex ROXY SEQUEIRA Roxy creates organic, nature-inspired jewellery in silver and gold, drawing on treasured childhood memories of South Africa to make pieces that evoke a sense of nostalgia, calm and joy. CLAUDE LESTER Claude is a multimedia artist, wildlife photographer and sculptor who explores the extraordinary forms of the natural world through photography, stone, metal and repurposed materials. BRETT BANKS Brett is a sculptor working primarily in stone and wood, combining traditional carving techniques with intuitive making and an ongoing exploration of materials. GARY BUCKETT Drawing on years of working with buildings and their materials, Gary creates sculptural work exploring weight, texture, form and the way an object’s meaning can change through its surroundings and context. NICKY BAGGE Working from her tiny Ashdown Forest studio, Nicky hand-builds unique ceramics inspired by the nature surrounding her, decorating each piece with sgraffito, oxides and the occasional quirky twist. PAGETTE HARRISON Pagette creates artisan gold and sterling silver jewellery rich in texture and organic form, inspired by the ocean, Sussex woodlands and the beauty of the natural world. NICK BOWERING Inspired by childhood memories of model-making, travel and his engineer grandfather, Nick creates imaginative pieces from scrap materials that celebrate ingenuity, nostalgia and making by hand. BLACK SHED ARTIST GROUP The Black Shed Artist Group brings together student artists taught by Sandy Infield, who will be exhibiting a selection of their work alongside Studio 12’s other artists and makers. by @sandyinfield

Day 2: Why Sussex? 🌿🎨 There’s something about Sussex that keeps me inspired. Living and working on the edge of Ashdown Forest, I’m surrounded by an ever-changing landscape — woodland, open heath, rolling Downs, wildflowers, farmland and an incredible sense of space. 🌳🌾 I’m constantly noticing little details: the way light moves through the trees, the shape of a seed head, the colours of the changing seasons, or the way a landscape stretches towards the horizon. It’s these everyday encounters with nature that often find their way onto my canvas. I love being able to take my easel outside, observe the landscape directly and let the place itself influence the colours, marks and composition of a painting. For me, Sussex isn’t just where I live and work — it’s part of my creative process. 💚 And one of the things I love most about being part of the creative community here is the incredible variety of artists and makers working locally. There is so much talent, generosity and inspiration to discover. I’d love to know — what inspires you about Sussex? And are there any local makers or artists you think deserve a little more love? Tag them below! 👇✨ 📸 by @getmediasavvy_ #AshdownForestOpenStudios #AFOS #AshdownForest #SussexArtists #SussexMakers by @sandyinfield
Day 1: A Little Introduction… 👩‍🎨🌿 Hello everyone, I’m Sandy Infield — painter, printmaker, batik artist, member of the Makers Directory and coordinator of Ashdown Forest Open Studios; a celebration of creativity inspired by the beautiful landscape that has long drawn artists, writers, and makers to this special part of Sussex 🌳🍃 My work has been shaped by a life spent between Vietnam, Indonesia, Africa and England, as well as my training at the Slade in London. Across these places and experiences, I’ve become fascinated by the meeting point between tradition, materials, nature and memory 📚🌺 In Indonesia, I was introduced to the intricate art of batik, watching women work with hot wax and tjanting tools in smoke-filled workshops, creating delicate patterns that would eventually emerge in brilliant colour. Their work showed me how art can be both devotion and daily practice. My love of oil paint has always remained at the heart of what I do. I love its smell, its texture and its unpredictability. My early training taught me the traditions of the craft — from stretching canvases and sizing them with rabbit-skin glue to studying the old masters. Over time, however, I began to break those rules, experimenting with wax, paper pulp, marble dust, scratching, dripping and layering. Now, based on the beautiful Ashdown Forest, nature has become an ever-present influence. Through colour, pattern, texture and composition, I create original images that celebrate the natural world — from the intricacy of the smallest details to the vastness of the forest and Downs. 🎨 So, what comes next? Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing more about the beauty and inspiration of Sussex, AFOS exhibitions coming up and the journey behind exciting things that have been happening! Stay tuned, and thank you for joining me! 💚 #ashdownforest #artist #maker #inspiration by @sandyinfield
