Pleased to present-- Forestation Syncopation (2021) an original Artwork owned by MTA Long Island Rail Road and commissioned by Metropolitan Transportation Authority/Arts & Design Located at New Hyde Park on the Long Island Railroad. With an emphasis on color and light, each shelter depicts the rhythmic flows and fleeting interruptions of the surrounding landscape as it might be seen from the window seat of a train. Intervals of evergreens and oaks mingle with streetlights and utility wires; clusters of houses and buildings intersperse with forest islands and leafy backyard. The title refers not only to a forested station, but also to the variety of unexpected rhythms found in a musical score. Syncopation is a musical term that involves a variety of rhythms which are in some way unexpected, and often considered a vital element in holding a musical track together. Forestation is the establishment of forest growth on areas that either had it previously or lacked it naturally. Together, these two concepts describe a continuous landscape that binds and connects the urban town-scape to the tree-lined streets and parks along the railroad.

Sandy Litchfield : Mountains and Lakes, through October 18.

I look for paintings that pull you somewhere you haven’t been, but still recognize, landscapes that feel both reinvented and inevitable. The places I live and know, particularly of New England and the Adirondacks, are not only my subject but also my pretext. In the studio, they get transformed: flattened, heightened, compressed into color relationships and spatial geometries that owe something to both maps and the history of landscape representation. Glassacious. 28x20” oil on canvas Glassacious is a word my family made up to describe the lake when its glassy surface is just begging you to go waterskiing. A bummer for everyone else on the lake whose peace is destroyed by a motor boat’s wake. But pure euphoria for the one skiing. The older I get the more I appreciate the glide of a gentle and quiet canoe 🛶. But sometimes it’s still fun to “rip it up” as we used to say. #glassywater by @sandylitchfieldstudio
