Mastering can often feel like a Dark Art. And to make matters worse there is a lot of conflicting advice floating around the internet. To me, mastering is not really that complicated. But it is subtle and it takes years to get really good at. Here are some of my thoughts on common mastering advice from years of mastering my own music and music for clients. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

One my biggest pet peeves in Logic Pro is that by default, volume normalization is turned on. There is just no place for this in a professional workflow in my opinion. If it is needed as an option at all - which is up for debate - it should be off by default. We as mixers, producers and songwriters should be choosing an appropriate loudness for our track and not have our daw automatically set the loudest peaks to 0.0. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

There are so many plugin options out there that it can be so overwhelming to decide which ones to get and even harder to decide which ones to use. Here are my thoughts on a few of the most popular options. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

MIDI Control Data which is how all MIDI devices talk to each other is expressed as a MIDI control number which for the general MIDI standard is a number from 0-127. This is why velocity is expressed this way on the velocity slider in Logic Pro. However that can be a bit abstract to understand. Thankfully we can change this to a 0-100% scale in the settings menu. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

Arrangement markers are a super powerful tool in Logic Pro because they allow you to both edit the arrangement in the main window very quickly but also because they let you fine tune your session players. However this content connection can sometimes be a negative if you want to change the marker without affecting the regions beneath it. That’s where this little hidden feature comes in. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

The problem with mix bus processing and printing stems in Logic Pro is that when all of the tracks are playing the plugins on the mix bus behave one way and when a single track is soloed the plugins behave a different way. This can be fixed by creating a sidechain aux of your entire mix and feeding that into the sidechain input of your mix bus processing. That way those plugins are always responding to the full mix even when printing a single stem. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

There is a lot of mixing advice out there and I understand it can be hard to know what advice to follow and which to ignore. The truth is a lot of this stuff comes down to personal opinion and how you like to work. There are a million ways to get to a good end result with mixing and at the end of the day I’m we are making art so there are no real rules, just wisdom that has worked for others. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

An easy, beginner friendly method for programming drums is available in Logic Pro. By utilizing cycle recording and input quantize you can record one drum part at a time but never have to stop and start recording. Best part is once you are done everything is perfectly in time. Just make sure that when setting the quantize value in the region inspector no regions are selected first and it says MIDO defaults at the top. This will give you input quantize for new midis regions instead of quantizing any existing regions in the session. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

There are so many EQ plugins out there it can be down right overwhelming. As always with this kind of stuff the best advice is to get really good at using a few and don’t worry about what you may be missing out on with the rest. EQ is the most powerful tool we have as mixers and learning how to use it properly and efficiently is way more important that which one you use. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

Logic Pro does not have the most customizable interface but there are some hidden settings that many don’t know about. One of them is the bright background check box for the piano roll. This changes the background of the piano roll white which can make it easier to see the grid lines. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

Mastering plugins are absolutely everywhere these days. There are great ones, bad ones and everything in between. With so much to choose from it is easy to suffer from decision paralysis. My best advice would be to find a mastering suite of plugins that you like and can afford and learn how to use those inside and out and only venture to other options when you have a firm grasp on the basics. But you may be surprised at the rating I gave Logic Pro’s Mastering Assistant 😮 #eartraining #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds

A simple volume automation tweak of only 0.5 or 1dB can make all the difference in how the energy of the last chorus translates. By automating up the drums and sometimes the bass as well by this small amount for the last chorus can keep the energy increasing for the duration of the song and make the final chorus feel like the climax that it should be. #mixingtutorial #mixingtips #logicprox #logicpro #musicproduction by @sangstersounds
