“My dad's a chef and my mom worked in the restaurant business with him. I grew up in the restaurant business. And they wanted me to join them, to take over the restaurant. But I started volunteering in hospitals at a young age and went to school for pre-med. I ended up liking research better. I loved helping people. And even though I didn't want to be interacting with patients, I thought the next best thing would be research.

My parents were always very supportive. They were really proud. They always told me to follow my dreams and do what I knew how to do best. And that's asking questions and doing scientific research.

So my biggest challenge is when we dedicate so much time to a project, and put so much effort into it, to then sometimes change directions. You get excited. You learn. It becomes kind of like your baby, where you start from zero and then you want to bring it forward, but those decisions are out of your hands–it’s part of our business. But I’m always hopeful. When there's hope, there's perseverance. I’m a positive person. I have to keep going forward to reach my goal of improving therapies and helping patients in need.

Part of going forward and growing as a scientist has been learning to deal with scientific criticism, and how to defend my points of view. It was difficult to get thrown in the deep end of science and have to survive, and think on the spot: how can I fix this issue, what is the next experiment? It challenged me to get better. To think faster. To go forward.

My dad is French and his culinary background is classical, like comfort food or country-style cooking. I've always been more meticulous in the kitchen. The plating has to be a certain way, and everything has to be precise. I really like sharing those moments with my dad, where the culinary meets the science. My parents came to this country and gave me opportunities they didn’t have, so it’s something that we can bond over.

He says, ‘Add some salt! Or add some of this!’ He doesn't measure anything. I say, ‘We have to use exactly one teaspoon.’ And I treat it like I’m in the lab. He says that's what makes me a better baker.”
