You live long enough meet good folks, lots of spots have some kind of story. How about this one. The first guy I met when I went to trend and asked where’s the jumps was a guy named JT. We cruised to 9th & he chilled for a minute then bounced. He was recovering from a busted leg, taking it easy. I would randomly run into him around town & he’d show me the lay of the land. One day I was riding by the record store & I hear “Dude! C’mere!” He has this low gravel scraping voice. Standing in a crew of cups of Shiner, “My Dad’s got a CD release party going on inside & we’re drinking beer with this homeless guy! Go get you one.” I do & then he’s, “these are the guys you need to meet.” It was part of the OG Austin crew. Pierce, etc. That was Rad. Took a while before I realized his Dad was Townes VanZandt, if you don’t know him, well he’s a friend of Willie Nelson. He sang Pancho & Lefty with him. Amazing songwriter. So one time, riding right by this here concrete blessing, JT says “let’s see what’s up with my Pops.” Right up the street there on Collier we roll up & his Dads outside in the porch, “You still riding that damn bike?!?” “Yeah Pop.” Low voice chuckling. Namaste this way… #bıcı #ChicanoDirtBros #bmx by @santanagram
So last week is 10 years since my last sip of alcohol! I am so much better today than before. Although I didn’t see drinking as a problem, that was the problem. When I look back at clips of my riding I feel I wasn’t going fast enough or I didn’t pull up enough. Basically I was not present. My motivation came from several different things. One main thing was Darryl Nau had come to Austin and asked if he could crash on my couch. At that time he was doing a month long self analysis where he was looking with intention at creating awareness of how he was spending his time & energy. His diet. His schedule. Rest. That meant he wasn’t going to be drinking while staying with me. He wasn’t trying to get me to not drink. He’d planned on having drinks at the end of that month. But I saw his commitment & discipline. I decided to attempt to go 7 days without drinking. I still went to 9th where most of the beers were consumed. There, someone said that I wasn’t going to be able to do it. Then it was on. I look at it as a 10 year manual. I’m not about to put my wheel down now. Drinking was fun, but there is a price. I’m not buying any more. I have been whispering in folk’s ears about not drinking for some time. I am so thankful that @darrylnau came to stay that time. What a huge impact. when I first moved here to Austin I was on this throwback idea already. Like in basketball there’s reverence for those who laid the groundwork. I had the same thoughts about BMX. Playing Basketball we would sometimes call out the players names as we were replicating their style. For me styles count. In this photo I’m in the Chrome TA I got at the BBQ spot in El Paso. I have a black mag in back & white one in front. The back tire I had at the time was a yellow COMP II ! way before you were even a twinkle in Yo Daddy eye. I got it from Cothorns lock & key right there where Wahoos used to be. Tom from empire working there helped me. The move is a Xup with a bandanna, hair was on Panteen. Across the street there was no High rise condo with Ann Richards living on high cotton. Actually there was a car dealership that had all these crazy cars. He had a boat-car & a Bug with crazy spoiler sticking out the back. Ninth was just 4 jumps with maybe a dozen dudes. This picture was taken by Brian Allman, although he’s not on instagram I still want to appreciate his friendship from early on. Today I was rearranging some things at my place and came across this. It’s raining & then Sunny in Austin right now. Hopefully you’re having a good weekend!!👊🏽🙏🏽🫔 Oh yeah also! This song! For the longest time I thought it was some monks chanting. I realize it’s a chant at the end of football matches where the crowd sings “You’ll never walk alone!” Hopefully that stays true with you #bıcı #bicicleta by @santanagram
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I can get precise with some. @jasrkvs proved in a big way print ain’t dead when he handed me this right here that he snapped and blew up. James had huge impact on my life . He moved into my apartments and he thought my riding was worth pointing a camera at. It was a fun time, we would just go cruise around with the camera and see what we could find. He was also really great at networking. Even before the internet, he knew people and would have connections with folks where I was a bit more less outgoing in some situations. It was interesting because we had different perspectives on things but we had overlap in some ways. As a friend I appreciated how brutally honest he was. His frankness is unparalleled. He started a bike company called Liquor Bikes and edited several videos where he’d give me a part, he organized a couple of cross country trips for the crew. When he lived at my spot, the raw tubing for this frame got delivered on the porch. The other guy with Liquor, Blaze Fooley welded it in a shack over there by the train tracks on Oltorf. When he was building it he called me to ask me to measure the length from the spindle to the brake mounts on the Barcode.Precise I’m saying. I got it chromed at Centex Platting. On the valve cap is a bullet cartridge cap. 48 spoke back wheel the Gute gave me. On the High Flange Drifter GT Mohawk… I started working at the campus and the shed I used is in the parking lot in the background. This was shot at @clowndogbikes where live music would fuel many jams. That weird line is a wire going across the street. I looked the other way day. Fakie Grizz Air is still a regular occurrence. thanks James! If you read all this I appreciate your attention. #bici by @santanagram

“let me tell you about the exotic Corduroy I found while traveling through Burma…” I think this pic was around 2016. This was when I quit drinking. It will be 10 years in April. I am happy with that decision. I have been whispering in peoples ears about not drinking for a while now. Stoked to say that I have influenced a handful of people to get some traction on getting away from that pattern. The impact on my life was significant. I feel stronger than I was during this time. I’m more patient. And I have more energy. If you’re thinking about not drinking i highly recommend it. If you want to have a conversation about it, lemme know! foto @jasrkvs Also if you know who that quote is from I will take you to Golden Corral buffet. #bici #bmx #atxbmx by @santanagram
Went back to El Paso for the Holidays. Some people might say El Paso is boring & doesn’t change. I beg to differ. I have a cousin I got into riding & he scooped me up to cruise around. We hit zero skateparks. Kept in my Gramma hood. I’ve said before, they do concrete different out there. I think it’s rooted in the way people have been shaping Adobe structures in the Southwest. Some of the curbs out there are so perfect, I would like to make a casting. Actually on that topic. I would like to start putting some concrete pieces around town. I have one or two spots in mind. Let’s get some krete!! #bici #bmx #elpasotx by @santanagram
rent a whip, drive a bunch of plants to El Paso Holiday Extravaganza. Texas is big. The sky is way way bigger. El Paso is Rad. There’s something about it that you can’t really explain but when you’re here- Well me, I appreciate micro observations & here the subtleties are quite obvious… by @santanagram
Instagram change up test flight. Drive to the pool, pull 5 buckets of muck water, then “hey whachu doing!?”- property management lady. I tried sweet talk, pero nah fam. So I cruised around to avoid traffic. The area has some old timey hits. I think it’s worth exploring… hopefully you are finding something to be joyful about!
