Artist @amandareevesart in conversation with Dr. Nina Levent, Director of @saparcontemporary Amanda Reevesʼ fascination with natural systems, their networks and the creatures who inhabit them initially drew her to studying marine biology, where she could revel in the fantastical creatures and unknown realms. These biological systems, so diverse and unique to their surroundings had such exquisite specificity and yet seemed so fantastical; untethered and floating within the space they inhabit, seemingly weightless. Nany Hemenway Barton’s signature style emerged in 1966 while living in La Paz, Bolivia, where she developed “bayetage,” a unique method combining flower-dyed wool, bayeta, and collage elements to produce sculptural tapestries. Inspired by local South American Indigenous cultures and natural landscapes, her works often celebrated themes of light, space, and the rugged shores of Maine, using materials like lambswool, linen, mohair, alpaca, and karakul. Join us tomorrow 6-8pm for an artist walkthrough with Benigna Chilla (Germany/US) at @saparcontemporary Having studied with Bauhaus professors in Germany, Chilla’s initial encounters with Minimalism in America sparked an engagement with principles of planar geometry around 1970; and her intuitive and personal pursuit of form and order would guide her practice for the rest of her career. Never interested in editions, Chilla transformed her prints into unique sculptural forms, beginning a decades-long, pioneering exploration of the conversation between two and three-dimensionality in art that continued with her optical paintings on layered screens from the 1980s until the early 2000s. We are pleased to announce a two-person exhibition by Nancy Hemenway Barton (US, 1920-2008) and Benigna Chilla (Germany/US) opening July 10. The exhibition brings together original bodies of work that these two women artists created in the relative isolation of their studios in upstate New York and on the coast of Maine.The works on view were made in the 1990s and 2000s and are shown for the first time in New York. Nancy Hemenway Barton, who was a subject of a major retrospective at the Denver Art Museum last year, worked from her studio on a tiny island off Boothbay Harbor in Maine, where she developed a textile practice that was unlike those of her contemporaries.Chilla, educated in Berlin by Bauhaus instructors, has been working in her studio in Chatham, NY, since she moved to the US in the late 1960s. Global Tree Project: AXIS MUNDI, a site-specific installation created for Malta Biennale 2026.“Omnia mutantur, nihil interit.”Everything changes; nothing perishes.Ovid, Metamorphoses, Book XVTwo Mediterranean olive trees, temporarily uprooted, their root systems entwined and suspended in mid-air within the open-air courtyard of the Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu.The trees hover within architecture built from Malta’s 23- to 14-million-year-old Globigerina limestone, a geological archive formed from fossilized marine life. Comment GALLERY to get our guide on exhibiting at galleries. I loved speaking to @saparcontemporary co-founder Nina Levent about @sofiacacciapaglia’s exhibition Apparizione. The exhibition closes this Saturday June 27, go see it if you’re in New York City! From @saparcontemporary’s website: Cacciapaglia’s paintings are about women. In her large oil paintings, figures live in a suspended, metaphysical world without any reference to reality. The female figures – monumental but also light and ethereal– emerge from the dream world and inhabit an enchanted dimension: they are linked to each other through contact and gazes, by silent dialogues which are at the base of the compositional balance. These women are symbols of a primordial woman. Painted flowers are seen as an expression of happiness and sweetness, like the female bodies. They are often very large and out of scale and dominate the observer in a veiled, magical and immersive way. Sofia Cacciapaglia was born in Ponte dell’Olio, Italy in 1983. She studied Fine Art at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milano where she graduated in 2006. After graduating she moved to New York in 2007 and had her first solo show at Industria SuperStudio, curated by photographer Fabrizio Ferri. Since then her work has been exhibited in galleries, foundations and museums in Italy, Switzerland, UK and China. by @saparcontemporary

Sofia Cacciapaglia: Apparizione closes today, June 27th. @sofiacacciapaglia Cacciapaglia’s female figures function as apparitions: mysterious, eternal women who exist outside of specific historical time. These women are depicted dancing, resting, embracing, and communing with one another, embodying wisdom, spirituality, and collective feminine power.
