We pass through Wayanad ever so often, but somehow never really stopped to explore it. So this time, we made it an intentional holiday and actually took the time to see what Wayanad had to offer.

Here are the highlights from our mid-week trip to this green paradise.

A day in my life — Chandu Limited Edition (1-minute version)

Chandu is very possessive about his toys, and he is wary of Pranav going anywhere near them.

He can sit there looking completely calm and unbothered… until Pranav touches the toy.

Then the wild beast comes out.

A minute later, he’s civilised again.
Until Pranav tries it one more time. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I hadn't danced a step for over two whole weeks, while recovering from shoulder and neck pain.

Yesterday, I performed again at a small event. I knew I wasn't back to my proper form yet, but I wanted to see where I stood.

And I could feel the difference.

The jumps that normally happen almost instinctively had to be thought through. I had to consciously focus on the landing. My hands needed an extra push to get the lines right. The same piece that I could once dance effortlessly suddenly felt heavy.

I didn't feel agile or graceful.

When you've spent years building stamina, technique and muscle memory, it's dissapointing to feel that ease temporarily disappear.

But recovery is a long process. You cannot hurry the body along just because the mind is eager to get back to dancing.

I have enormous respect for my physiotherapist, whose insights and precise instructions have made me understand the recovery process so much better. I followed them carefully, even when I was impatient to get back to dancing.

And perhaps the biggest relief came this morning.

After all that dancing, I woke up without pain.

One of the things I had dreaded most was that returning to the stage might set me back. It didn't.

That is progress.

If you're injured, please don't wait for something small to become something big. Get it checked. Rest. Follow the right guidance. Give your body the time it needs.

Whether it's dance, sport, exercise or simply recovering from an injury, don't ignore the small things. Get them checked, give your body the time it needs, and don't rush the process. by @sapna.jayaram

Madhura Madhura Venugeetham was one of the first padams on Lord Krishna that I learnt in the 1990s. I don't think I understood the beauty of the piece at that time.

The composition celebrates the enchanting flute music of Krishna and the spell it casts on those who hear it.

Now, when I teach it to my students as one of their first abhinaya pieces, I find myself discovering the poetry of the lines, the musicality of the composition, and the brilliance of the raga chosen for it.

18 years. 18 titles. And somehow, still not enough to capture the phenomenon that is Pranav. 😂

Happy 18th, my boy. ❤️
Wouldn’t have you any other way.

P.S. Reel by Divith, because this mom is still figuring out the Gen Z code. 😎😂 by @sapna.jayaram

No festival is complete until every single family member has their new outfit ready. Safe to say someone is feeling very distinguished in his new Onam collar! 💛✨

It’s not always possible to celebrate Onam in God’s Own Country, but today, we didn’t miss the experience one bit. A simple pookalam brought together children from across our neighbourhood, and amidst laughter and stories, we created something beautiful together. 🌸

That’s the magic of Onam.

ഒരുമിച്ച് ഓണം ആഘോഷിക്കുമ്പോഴുള്ള സന്തോഷം തന്നെ വേറെയാണ്! 💛

Four days later the video of 6-year-old Pranay Teja still deeply unsettles me. In those few seconds of footage, you can see a little child in distress, frightened and overwhelmed, in the care of the very adult he was supposed to be safe with.

As a teacher myself, and as a parent, I cannot simply scroll past it.

We don't entrust teachers with just our children's education. We entrust them with LITTLE LIVES.

Children who may be too young to articulate what frightens them. Too intimidated to speak up.

Subject knowledge is not enough. A teacher needs much more than qualifications.

They need patience.
Empathy.
Emotional maturity.
Self-control.

And the ability to correct a child without humiliating, frightening or hurting them.

I have had my own share of concerns with teachers my children have had. I have questioned things. I have also demanded accountability when things felt off.

Because respecting teachers and holding them accountable are NOT mutually exclusive.

Whatever the investigation ultimately establishes, there should be no ambiguity about this:

Nobody touches a child in anger.

No abuse should be ignored.
No warning sign should be dismissed.
No position of authority should place anyone beyond accountability.

If you don't have the patience or temperament to deal with children, PLEASE DON'T ENTER THIS PROFESSION. by @sapna.jayaram

“I spend every waking moment thinking of you, worshipping your feet, my Skanda, completely lost in my love for you… and you are angry with me? How can you possibly be?”

The Pallavi of this Shabdam portrays something so tender — a loving complaint with a pang of disbelief and longing. by @sapna.jayaram

A trip down memory lane: Dobber was my first and only pet dog. For nine beautiful years, he was such a soft, gentle, obedient presence in our home.

He had this quiet way of being around the young and the old who visited our home, as though he instinctively knew to be softer with them. And then there was that crazy, almost whole-body wag with his tail stump, whenever he was happy to see us.

He grew from being a naughty pup into a quiet, steady presence who kept us sane during our biggest trials in life.

I brought Kitty home on a whim. A friend told me she was giving away her cat’s new kittens, and before I knew it, Kitty was home with us.

He was a cat with a strong personality and a powerful demeanor. He came, he conquered, and he promptly bullied Dobber into submission.

Poor Dobber would snuggle with Kitty, even while shivering whenever Kitty decided to throw one of his little fits! 😄

Kitty eventually wandered away after a few years, leaving behind his lady love and family of four kittens, who went on to continue his legacy.

They became a big part of the neighborhood, occupying almost every home in the area. Many of our friends also adopted several of Kitty's grandchildren.

In many ways, Kitty is the reason I became a cat person. After him, I simply couldn’t look away from a cat.

Dobber passed away in May 2005. I had just arrived from Bangalore that morning. I still feel that he was holding on, waiting just long enough to see me one last time before he took his final breath.

I patted him and hugged him before stepping away for a bath. He quietly drifted off as soon as I moved away. Somehow, that felt like a final gift from him to me.

He made my life so much fuller simply by being in it. He was my first dog, my first furry companion, and a love that has never really been replaced. He will always have that very special place in my heart. ❤️ by @sapna.jayaram
