โ€œI made them lay their hands in mine and swear
To reverence the King, as if he were
Their conscience, and their conscience as their King,
To break the heathen and uphold the Christ,
To ride abroad redressing human wrongs,
To speak no slander, no, nor listen to it,
To honour his own word as if his Godโ€™s,
To lead sweet lives in purest chastity,
To love one maiden only, cleave to her,
And worship her by years of noble deeds,
Until they won her; for indeed I knew
Of no more subtle master under heaven
Than is the maiden passion for a maid,
Not only to keep down the base in man,
But teach high thought, and amiable words
And courtliness, and the desire of fame,
And love of truth, and all that makes a man.โ€
- Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Idylls of the King, โ€œGuinevereโ€ (King Arthur describing the vows of his knights: to love one woman faithfully, honor her through noble deeds, and be a even more a better man because of that love).

The knight and his lady has been one of my favorite tropes ever since I was a child. Thereโ€™s something so timeless and captivating about the quiet devotion, unwavering loyalty and unspoken trust they share.
For this edit, I wanted to bring the feeling of a knight whose purpose is to protect, serve, and stand beside his lady through every hardship and a bond that goes far beyond duty. Itโ€™s about sacrifice, faith, and a love that often speaks louder through actions than words.

Game of Thrones is genuinely one of my favorite series ever. I think one of the reasons I love it so much is the way it combines so many things I really like. It has all these historical influences, but at the same time itโ€™s completely immersed in this huge fantasy world. The politics, the different houses, the costumes, the charactersโ€ฆ thereโ€™s just so much to love and analyze. Itโ€™s also one of my comfort shows. Iโ€™m actually slowly rewatching it at the moment and I swear I could watch it over and over again and never get tired of it. I love that universe so much.

Sdt: happy birthday Chloe! Wishing you all the best and I hope you have a wonderful day! โœจ

Inns and the Roman Court

Lunches, banquets, celebrations, and festivities of various kinds, organized to forge alliances, grant favors, gain power, supremacy, and influence, were all part of the life of Lucrezia Borgia (1480โ€“1519), who lived in an exclusive and extraordinary world, in a unique and incomparable position.
Accustomed to luxury and power, it was her duty to attend all the ceremonies over which she presided, charming her guests not only with her beauty but also with her education and culture. She spoke Spanish, French, and Italian, as well as some Latin, and she also had a basic knowledge of music, poetry, and dance.

Her relationship with good food began in childhood, when she was still in the care of her mother, Giovanna de Candia dei Cattanei, known as Vannozza, who was of Lombard origin and managed some of the most famous inns in Rome: the Biscione, the Fontana, the Leone, and the Angelo, the latter located in Tor di Nona, just a short distance from St. Peterโ€™s. The Angelo offered excellent cuisine and exquisite white wine from its own vineyard.
There was also the renowned and highly regarded Locanda della Vacca, where delicious dishes were prepared, more wholesome and authentic than sophisticated.

[โ€ฆ.] What is beauty to me now, if it does not have your face?
There is no other face I long to look upon.
Because you are not simply the most beautiful among others, my love.
To me, there are no others.
There is only you.
You are what beauty has become to me, the only one my eyes long to see and the only one my heart would ever choose. [โ€ฆ]

I wanted to do edit about men whose love is defined by devotion. When they love, there is no comparison, no competition. The woman they love is not simply โ€œthe best among othersโ€, or โ€œthe best optionโ€, in their eyes, there are no others in that sense, just one woman who becomes the center of their love, desire and devotion.
She is not the most beautiful woman among others women, she is not the most beautiful than the others. Beauty itself has taken her face, beauty has become inseparable from her face. Longing has learned her name. She is not the most captivating soul among many. She is the soul that captivates them. She is the one, not the best.
It is not โ€œI have seen everyone else and I still choose you.โ€ It is almost as though the very category of โ€œeveryone elseโ€ disappears. That is what devotion means in this edit. It is a kind of inward exclusivity. ๐ŸŒน

Deep & intense love + recognition + desire + devotion + the certainty of: โ€œyou arenโ€™t the best. You are the one.โ€

Few monarchs have captured the imagination of a nation as much as King Henry V (r. 1413-22). The inspiration behind hundreds of books, plays, and movies, the nine-year reign of this English monarch is deemed as one of the most successful not just of any English king, but of any monarch in history. Read on to discover why he inspired William Shakespeare, how England fared during the Hundred Yearsโ€™ War, and why he left behind a legacy that few, if any, monarchs have been able to match ever since.

One of the defining moments in Henryโ€™s life before he became king was the invaluable military experience that he gained. He fought against the Welsh, specifically, Owain Glyndwr, in several of the Welsh Wars at the turn of the century.

In 1403, at the Battle of Shrewsbury, Henry was hit in the face by an arrow, which entered his skull. He was lucky to survive; most other soldiers would have died from infection if not from the impact, but Henry was fortunate enough to have access to the best physicians in the land. He made a recovery, although he would bear the scar for the rest of his life.
ย
Until 1408, it was the efforts of the Welsh leader Owain Glyndwr that took up most of Prince Henryโ€™s time, but with his fatherโ€™s ailing health, he ended up devoting less time to the Welsh campaigns and more to the ruling of the kingdom.

#onthisdayinhistory Cesare Borgia was born in Subiaco in 1470

When Cesare was born, in the year 1475, his family, originally from Spain, had already established deep roots in Italy. The origins of the Borgias must, in fact, be sought in the vast lands of the Iberian Peninsula, long before their lineage rose to extraordinary fortune, clothed itself in the mantle of immortal fame, and left a profound and indelible mark on the history and collective memory of the peoples of Italy, as well as those of Europe as a whole.
Cesareโ€™s ancestors on his fatherโ€™s side came from Jaฬtiva, near Valencia, a small town inhabited by people of mixed Spanish and Arab ancestry. It stands at the meeting point of the fertile valleys of the Vega and the Bixquert, upon a rocky hill characterized by low white houses, small squares, and the old Collegiate Basilica of Santa Maria, filled with memories and gifts of Callixtus III, the first pope of the Borgia line, who first opened his eyes here. Around the town rise the sombre bulk of the Moorish castle and the great massif of Bernisa, formed of tawny stone.

The imagery of riding through the night, entering the fight, and ignoring the warning signs fits the journey of Aemond through war, especially as his anger and desire for control grow even more. His missing eye is one of the clearest physical reminders of the child he used to be and of the moment that fundamentally changed him. Showing his sapphire eye to Luke at that moment connects the reckless man he becomes with the wounded child he once was. Then the pre-chorus completely changes the perspective. After all the images of Aemond as powerful, dangerous and almost untouchable, he is suddenly alone. โ€œWhoโ€™s there to listen when it becomes too loud?โ€ Adult Aemond spends so much of his life trying to be strong enough to protect himself, to fight and to never appear vulnerable again. But underneath the warrior he becomes is still the child who once needed someone to protect him.

When I heard this part, I immediately thought of Anakin and his entire journey from Jedi to Darth Vader. Initially Anakin was brave, determined, impulsive, and always ready to fight for the people he loved.
But his visions of Padmeฬโ€™s death and his promise to protect her make him so terrified of losing her that he wanted to do anything to prevent it.
The idea of โ€œno fear of the graveโ€ is so tragic for him. Anakin was never particularly afraid of his own death. What he couldnโ€™t accept was the death of someone he loved. His attachment to Padmeฬ and his fear of losing her become stronger than everything he once believed in as a Jedi. In trying desperately to save her, he ended up becoming Darth Vader.

At court, banquets, tournaments, music, and dances followed one another in an endless celebration. And beneath the glow of the Renaissance festivities, Cesare and Lucrezia danced as though, if only for a single night, the weight of their name could dissolve into the rhythm of the music.

I wanted to post it for my name day (not my birthday), the feast day associated with my name, which I celebrate.

When I first heard this song, I immediately thought of Cesare Borgia, especially because of the first part, which is the one I used for this edit. The image of the โ€œfearless riderโ€, riding through the night with a clear goal and a dream in mind, really reminds me of his personality with his ambition, determination, and relentless drive to achieve what he wanted. At the same time, the questions โ€œWho does he turn to when it all comes crashing down?โ€ and โ€œWho saves the saviour?โ€ give a much more tragic meaning. Behind the image of someone strong, fearless and seemingly unstoppable, there is still someone vulnerable when everything eventually falls apart. I think that contrast between ambition, strength, and vulnerability fits Cesare particularly well, and thatโ€™s what made me associate the song with him.
