Love is Everywhere

“I was on a work trip here in Austin and an 18 year old from my hometown sent me a piece on what he thought love was. It motivated me to write this poem after I got back to my hotel and hung up my scrubs.
For only being in high school, I think he has a pretty damn good grasp on what love is: it’s true and it’s subjective. No one can tell you when to feel, how you feel; it’s an unwritten attraction brought about by the powerful forces of nature. It’s a really special bond that everyone should embrace when they can. And it is scary, I must admit, but I think that’s what makes it most fulfilling.

Who is The Muffin Man?

“One of my friends wrote this poem to recite at my first poetry read when we debuted the book. I encouraged them to write poems of their own and he came up with this light jest. Although I find this poem hilarious, I think there are two significant takeaways that can be derived. First, anyone can write poetry and it doesn’t have to fit any specific criteria; it’s what you want to make of it. This is probably one of my favorite poems I’ve read all year and every time I hear it I still roll on the floor laughing. The word choice is fantastic.
Second, in a larger scope, anyone is able to be anything they want or better yet do anything they want. Anyone can be a poet, a musician, a comedian, an engineer, an athlete. You just have to work at it if you really want it.
Anyone can be The Muffin Man.”

You’re There & I’m Here

“No matter which end of a break up you’re at, it always proves to be pretty challenging.
I’ve had issues in the past fully letting go of some of my partners, even when I knew that we weren’t as compatible as I initially hoped.
Regardless, letting go of someone like that is a sudden shock to the system which leads to a difficult transition.
Something that has helped me move on is remembering the good times I had with my former partner. But at the same time, understanding and conceptualizing why we didn’t work.
I think hate is baggage and holding onto spite and negative emotions is only going to hurt you even more through the process.
Don’t be afraid to examine your emotions and embrace the highs and lows. After all, it’s what you’re made of.”

Genuine

“Some say ‘I love you’ isn’t used enough, I would argue it’s used too much. I’m not saying you shouldn’t say it. Actually, quite the opposite. I wish people would say it more, but to the people who they really want to hear it. We throw it around a little too lightly. Sometimes even as a lie just to please people which is about as bad as it can get. Say it when you mean it.”

Brown Eyes

“When I was growing up, I felt like everyone loved the blue-eyed girl or boy. To be fair, blue eyes are conventionally more desirable. However, something I found so attractive about brown eyes was the rebellious nature of it- the fact that my opinion went against the grain.
Now, I find more endearing qualities in brown eyes: a deep, dark brown that personifies the eyes to be vividly intense and carry so much emotion. Or light brown ones that contain an overwhelming amount of compassion and understanding.
Moreover the eyes are a metaphor: that beauty is relative to the individual perceiving it.
Nowadays, there are so many advertisements and people telling us what is beautiful. ‘You need a body shape like this and a weight like that but your lips to be this size and your hair needs to be done.’
You don’t need to justify yourself or your preferences to anyone. There is true beauty in imperfections as they are the things that make us unique.
I think if everyone found beauty in the strange, the weird, and the abnormal, the world would a better place.”

Collateral Beauty

“First of all, if you haven’t seen Collateral Beauty starring Will Smith you definitely should. I spent 45 minutes of my flight back to Spain hiding tears from the person next to me because of that movie. An overarching theme put very simply would be, “good can come with the bad”. It seems a bit twisted to think good things can come from bad ones, but I kind of see it as one of the few productive ways to get through tough times. It’s sometimes frustrating and sad to realize how something good may have stemmed from something bad, but it’s a reality nonetheless. This poem came from that unfortunate realization. That I made changes I should have made a long time ago only after I ended a relationship with someone I love. Changes that could have made all the difference. Knowing all of this now, if I couldn’t change anything, I would still do it all again. I would go through the love and the pain because it was worth it and I’m (fortunately and unfortunately) a better person for it.”

Walls

“I put an immense strain on my last relationship through my hesitation to be open and honest. It will stay with me forever that a person I loved and love had to question if I actually did. Expressing myself wasn’t and isn’t easy, but I’m working on it. It won’t always be rainbows and butterflies, but that’s also the point. Arguments and compromise, emotions and expression, telling people how you feel- it’s all important. The good comes with the bad sometimes and I think the world is better for it: a vulnerable and trusting place where we can confidently be ourselves. It starts with just being you.”

The Little Things

“I wrote this poem when I wasn’t showing a former partner enough love. And I was thinking of ways to fix it with a big, grandiose gesture. But I realized the only way to amend these issues was through consistently showing her how I felt on a daily basis.
You don’t wake up one day and realize that you’re in love with someone. Sure you can tell when you’re infatuated and you find someone alluring. However, well-seasoned love takes time, energy and patience. It’s not about a big marriage proposal or the vacations; it’s taking the extra 7 seconds to give them a passionate kiss before you leave for work in the morning. Or sending them a thoughtful voice note when you’re out to let them know you’re thinking of them.
It’s the little things.”
