Long before tablets, X Box, Play Station and Nintendo took over children’s free time, one collected stamps and coins, built with Lego, raced dinky cars, rode bikes around the neighbourhood and generally let our imaginations wander. I rediscovered my stamp collection albums the other day and instantly felt a surge of excitement and wonder— the same emotions that would be evoked in me when I collected stamps as an 8 year old. Amongst my collection, I also found unused stamps with the face of Hitler from Germany during the Third Reich. A neighbouring German Aunt of mine who was also an avid collector must have given those to an unsuspecting me. These lost and found albums are a special reminder of a time gone by, when the mind had enough time and space to imagine, nurture curiosity and be fascinated by a life of boundless adventure, spanning lands far and wide. How many of you collected stamps or had collections of different things? #nostalgia #stamps #stampcollection #the70s by @saqibmalik33

You’ve come a long way, baby! Born in the 60s and ready to take on the 60s with wonder and curiosity. Blessed and full of gratitude. And thank you Ami and Abu for that magic moment that produced me! #happybirthdaytome #happyhappyhurrah by @saqibmalik33

The Bali high! Six days of bliss. Yes, there is traffic, land conversions and many, many tourists. Some loud and entitled and some quietly appreciative. With its lush, varied landscape, air of spirituality and the generous hearts of its people, Bali is a delight for both the spirit and the senses. #bali #indonesia #eatlovepray #wanderlust #traveldiaries Images and videos taken by my guide and friend @made_omes_vans_hugo_bali by @saqibmalik33

Economical in scale but big on emotions, rich in texture and firmly rooted in a relatable socio-cultural milieu, Aag Lagay Basti Main is a lesson on how to intelligently produce a successful commercial Pakistani film in times of austerity. The humour, the nuances and the drama all hit home, even when the script veers from the sublime to the ridiculous. Mahira Khan delivers a sharp performance as a housemaid with a penchant for petty theft and grandiose dreams, while Fahad Mustafa further perfects his hapless, do-good everyman persona. This time muscles are added to his skill set, bringing him closer to the conventional masculine hero archetype. The timing and chemistry between the two stars is combustible. Javed Sheikh, as Marble Seth, a rich don in and out of dementia, is delightfully deadpan, while renowned talk show host Tabish Hashmi swaggers and winks his way forward, no holds barred, as Chota Marble, a metrosexual narcissist with daddy issues. Cameos and supporting performances by social media stars such as Ali Abdullah are bang on. The biggest kudos, however, go to Big Bang Films, the cinema arm of Fahad Mustafa and Dr Ali Kazmi’s production company, for introducing us to Director and Screenwriter Bilal Atif Khan. Emanating from the Nabeel Qureshi-Fiza Ali cinematic universe, Bilal has successfully added his own fuel to the fire. #aaglagaybastimein #mahirakhan #fahadmustafa #aryfilms #pakistanicinema @bigbangentertainment2.0 @mahirahkhan @mustafafahad26 @tabishhashmi @javedsheikhofficial @blah_atifk @aliabdullah_durrani by @saqibmalik33

Years may come and go… here’s one thing I know… all my life… you’re a friend of mine! Happy birthday @tabuzaffar . Here’s to an endless parade of silliness and laughter! by @saqibmalik33

It’s the early 2000s, post the Delhi parliament attacks. The rattled Indian Intelligence launches operation #dhurandhar and agent Jaskirat Singh Rangi— aka Hamza Ali Mazari— is sent to Pakistan via Afghanistan. Instead of infiltrating the shadowy world of militant training camps or the headquarters of an extremist organisation, Mazari heads straight for the violence strewn streets of Lyari in Karachi. The mission is to integrate himself into the gang of local kingpin and Baloch cause sympathiser Rahman Baloch, also known as Rahman Dacait, and disrupt the nexus between state sponsored cross border terrorism and the Lyari underworld, saving the day for India. Sound outlandish? To this Karachi wala it certainly does, given the limited, localised dimensions of the Lyari gang war during that period. But then this is the world of the recent Bollywood blockbuster Dhurandhar, and given that the film’s mantra is, “yeh naya Hindustan hai, yeh ghar main ghussay ka bhi aur maaray ga bhi,”nothing is out of bounds. And so we have President “Zarwari”, the Pakistan Awami Party, shady money launderers Javed and Altaf Khanani, a sinister ISI major, rogue cop Chaudhry Aslam, a gallery of characters from the Lyari underworld with their actual identities and a sexually charged, beefed up Ranveer Singh as Hamza Ali Mazari, with his lion’s mane, his predatory gait and a hawk’s gaze, ready to own the jungle— and romance a minister’s daughter in his spare time on the streets of Lyari on his buffed up bike. What one makes of Dhurandhar depends on where one stands on the politics of the film. Many in India see it as bravado filmmaking, astutely mixing real life footage, situations and characters with high octane action and drama to create a compelling narrative. Across the border to this viewer, Dhurandhar is, at best, a cleverly packaged fantasy, blending two of Bollywood’s most trusted genres, the Muslim-baiting Mumbai gangster saga and the Pakistan-hating, hyper nationalist action drama. Elevated by kinetic sound design, a couple of explosive action set pieces and some inspired casting, #Dhurandhar, however, is too locked in to its one dimensional propagandist mindset to go anywhere. by @saqibmalik33
