Thank you to @fox5sandiego for giving space to this conversation. 🤍

This was bigger than one story.
It was about Malik.
It was about survivors, grieving families, the Muslim community, and the lasting trauma gun violence leaves behind.

No matter our religion, culture, or background… we are human first.

Through @survivorsrejoice we will continue creating spaces for healing, community, and hope.

If you believe in this work, please follow, share, visit our website, and consider donating to help us keep these spaces accessible for survivors and families in need. 🤍

Thank you @shallyzomorodi @raoulmartineztv for approaching this story with care. by @saraaabekele

What is this hate people are carrying inside themselves?

I just left the mosque. For 3 hours I watched mothers waiting to find out if their children were alive. The fear on their faces is something I’ll never forget.

An entire community is shattered. An entire bloodline of trauma just unfolded… all because of hate.

This is bigger than religion. Bigger than politics. This is humanity failing humanity.

I’m honestly disgusted by what this nation is becoming. by @saraaabekele

Six years later, and my story is still being told❤️

From surviving a shooting on October 26, 2020, to standing in spaces where my story can reach others… GOD really can turn pain into purpose.

I carry Malik with me in every room, every story, and every life I touch. A part of him lives on through me 🕊️❤️‍🩹

Grateful to have shared my journey with @mothstories @unlikelycollaborators and @mend_collaborative . Every time I tell my story, I’m reminded why I created @survivorsrejoice Our stories deserve to be heard, and healing is possible. 🫶🏾

I thought I could party, drink, turn up 4 days a week. I thought I had to be in the mix. I think I had FOMO 😂

But in reality, I was running from myself and from the person God designed me to be.

I had to go through those different versions of myself to eventually rediscover who I truly am at heart.

Sometimes we repeat the same patterns because they’re familiar. Until we become aware of them, hold ourselves accountable, and start rewiring what we’ve been conditioned to believe we need.

So ask yourself today:

Are you becoming the version of yourself you were designed to be, or are you living as the version you created to survive?

I used to think this song said, “the dark days are over” 😂 and I would sing it with so much testimony in my heart.

The dog days are over… and I’m here to tell you, the dark days are over too. 🙏🏾✨

I had the honor of speaking at @creativemornings_sd about violence, trauma, pain, juvenile hall ,healing, and everything in between. I’m so blessed and filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share my story and my voice.

What are you addicted to…

Addiction shows up in many different forms. Sometimes it’s not substance it can be money, validation, toxic relationships, success, control, or the version of ourselves we’re afraid to let go of. Healing begins when we’re honest about what has a hold on us.

As I get older, these photos mean more and more to me.
I look back and remember the laughter, the conversations, the letters, the friendship… you.

I’ve saved every letter you ever wrote me.
You were never just a memory to me you were someone I genuinely loved and cared for. My friend.

And honestly… the world still feels your absence.
Especially now. Watching more violence unfold, watching communities mourn, watching families pray for their loved ones to make it home… this world is still carrying so much pain.

Five years later and I still think about how much hatred and violence continue to ripple through people’s lives.

But today, on your birthday, I choose to remember your spirit, your heart, and the love you gave so freely.

Happy heavenly birthday, Milly.
Forever in my heart. 🤍
