So I spent a week up at Hamilton College (gasp!) and helped students make some funny cardboard boxes that they’ll be green screening into. It was unbelievably fun!! Thanks @annaoxygen by @saracwalsh

This is Fred Wielandt, Props Master on the Monkey King. He is a joy to work with. But I mostly took his photo for @sophieblackall who I know loves pictures of humans carrying large produce. 💗 taken in San Francisco Opera by @saracwalsh

This is my new friend Steve. Steve is a light walker for the San Francisco Opera. So his job is to stand on stage during tech where performers will be, and then we can light him.

I was fascinated by Steve the moment I laid eyes on him, and today took some time to get to know him better. Steve was born in Brooklyn but has lived here since the 60s. He sang for years with the Lamplighters. And for the Opera as a chorus member. And he was a supernumerary too, but as he said “They don’t bring in as many supers as they used to.”

Steve is 88, born in 1937. Just like John Conklin. Who I’ve been thinking of since I came out in November when I found a photo of his Ring Cycle on the wall.

It was good to talk to Steve today. I’m glad he’s here. And I feel so lucky I had John as a mentor. taken in San Francisco Opera by @saracwalsh

John Conklin was my teacher, my mentor, my spirit animal. He made (good?) trouble. The world could only hold him for so long but I am so so sad he is gone from it. RIP friend. by @saracwalsh
