My dad passed away on Thursday. I’ll start this reflection with his own words left in his will, “I leave my most valuable possessions - my love for my family and for justice for all throughout the world - to my wife, children and friends to carry on…I wish to be cremated and have my ashes scattered in any and all locations that my wife and three children consider to be important to myself and to them. I have had some marvelous travels with all of them.”

Relationships are complicated. And those with our parents are our best teachers. This statement from my father encapsulates so much of him that has carried on in me.

Like a love of living life. With him I rode roller coasters at Six Flags, Disney and Kings Dominion. We saw the Grand Canyon and drove up to a snow-capped peak to throw snowballs in our shorts and t-shirts. We jumped waves at Misquamicut. We toured Washington DC in his long puke-green-colored Cadillac. We caught tadpoles in Shenandoah National Park. He took my friends and me to concerts like Candlebox, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers and even Woodstock ‘99.

Justice for all was introduced to me while he read The Diary of Anne Frank out loud to me. Through the National Organization for Women sticker that was always displayed prominently. With my dad I attended my first anti-war protest in NYC after the US invaded Iraq.

It is human nature to allow challenges to sit in the forefront of our minds. Our daily choices don’t always reflect the love that we have at our core. We live complex lives in a world that often feels chaotic.

I love you, Dad. I am grateful you were my father.

I’ll end with his own final words in his will. “Namaste to all - both friend and foes.” by @sarah7487884

It has been a full year of Margaret! She loves leaning against her human friends at the dog park, stealing everything from the kitchen counter, and laying her head directly on my pillow. #dangal #greatdane #kangal by @sarah7487884

Today is Elka’s 17th birthday! So far we’ve celebrated with an escape room and a Fancy Nancy birthday party. I have so much love for this incredible human and grateful she has so many people around her who feel the same way. by @sarah7487884

✨ Meet Margaret ✨
Our family has grown! 🐾 Margaret is a Great Dane–Kangal mix (yes, she’ll be huge) and Odin has already stepped into his role as her wise big brother. Watching him teach her how to wrestle, go down stairs, and navigate the dog park has been pure joy. 💜

Their bond inspired a new project: Lessons for a Pearl 💎 — a Substack where I share Margaret’s adventures in Odin’s voice. It’s funny, sweet, and a little mystical.

➡️ Follow along at @odin_margaret if you want to join us for all of the puppy content

Welcome, Margaret! 🐶💜💎

Odin is living his best life. He got to play on an ice rink and swim in a pool today. He had to be saved twice by the lifeguard in the big pool because we learned swimming is not his superpower. by @sarah7487884

I just want to take a moment to thank my kids. 💛

For being patient while I talk (nonstop) about Substack and podcasting.
For putting up with the phone always out, the editing sessions, the “just five more minutes.”
And most importantly—for allowing me to share glimpses of their stories and struggles, like I did in this week’s episode with Brielle Brasil.

These aren’t easy conversations to have—especially as a parent trying to walk that line between honoring your kids’ privacy and showing up honestly. But they’ve given me their consent, their trust, and their quiet support every step of the way.

Thank you for letting me be real. Thank you for letting me grow.
And thank you for reminding me what this work is really about.

Love you both more than you’ll ever know. 💫 by @sarah7487884
