What I did on my summer vacation. . .

My phone got run over by a car in California (where else?). I haven't had a mobile phone since 15th of August, so I'm very sorry if I've not gotten back to messages. I'm slowly getting data recovered and a new phone up and running. It has been a labyrinth of bureaucracy, authentication codes and money I don't have so please email me or what's app if you need to get in touch ✌🏼

I've gotten used to not having instant information so that may be the reason too. Moving slowly back into work and social life 🐢🐢🐢🐢 by @sarah__________j

Who gets remembered in art history and who gets left out? The work of Augusta Savage has been overlooked for too long, and Sarah and Marie-Anne explain why…

In our latest episode of Artfully Said we were joined by the talented Sarah Jaffray (Modern & Contemporary Art Historian) and Marie-Anne Mancio (Arts Historian and Writer). They explore the complex history of women in art, challenging familiar myths around “great women artists,” the “girl boss” narrative, and the ways female artists have been written out of the Western art canon.

Stream Artfully Said now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts! Link in bio.

For my academics - this is something I wrote as part of a project at University of Arts London: it's on portraiture and memory, a while back. It's got more than enough French (inaesthetic) philosophy, very Goldsmithy 😉

Zurbarán's cherabim and textiles @nationalgallery

I did not know how connected his work was to the Americas - his paintings were sent to Lima and Buenos Aires and I am wishing there was more on this exhibition about his potential impact on colonial Spanish art in Latin America.

The most tender picture of a child Virgin Mary with her embroidery pillow and of course one of the best paintings in the history of Europe: Angus Dei (Lamb of God).

Plus a weird colossal painting (always take a selfie with a colossal head).

Zurbarán's art is weird in the best possible sense: quiet, intense, deeply serious and contemplative. by @sarah__________j

I wrote about Whistler, an artist who usually confounds me. He's hard to teach and hard to write about because he wanted to be. You cannot explain his art and that is its point.

The last words of the exhibition have been raining in my head: 'completeness is a reason for ceasing to exist.' So I wrote about the relevance of that today and how it makes me think of Bernard Steigler and technology and limits.

On substack.
