Traditional eating disorder treatment & research often prioritizes & asserts that “full recovery” (whatever that means!) is the primary goal of care. I think that often the messages communicated to providers is that their jobs are to “make people better” & this is the most important above all else. I think because of this, it can be easy for client autonomy to be brushed aside for the sake of the provider’s ego & needing to reach goals of “recovery & wellness”. I will be the first to say that I’ve been guilty of falling into this mindset before knowing any better. I’ve had to unlearn and unpack what I thought I knew; in order to better support & care for my clients.

Our clients are deserving of autonomy, client- centered care, with unconditional compassion at the center. by @sarahdewysetherapy

Say it with me - there is truly nothing atypical about atypical anorexia 👏

I’ve got a whole lot to say on this topic. I’ll leave you with this - our clients deserve so much better than to feel dismissed, not sick enough, or valid enough in their experiences. I will be the first to say that diagnosis is not everything AND for many it is an important part of access to medical & mental health care, particularly if you are trying to use insurance.

Please note: I utilized quotations specifically for “atypical anorexia” to highlight that I do not feel that this DSM diagnosis does our clients justice and continues to perpetuate fatphobia, preference for thinness and the idea that anorexia is a “thin person illness”. We know that eating disorders impact all bodies and it’s time that the DSM reflects what decades of research are indicating.

it’s a common misconception that eating disorders are about beauty & vanity.

the reality is that people want to feel safe in their bodies & in the world.

the world isn’t safe for the BIPOC & LGBTQ+ communities. The world isn’t safe for fat and diverse bodies.

I wish more people understood that eating disorders behaviors often allow people to feel safe in their bodies. Recovery is often much more nuanced than just giving up some behaviors & simply using some coping skills, especially when the world isn’t always safe.

Harm reduction is life saving 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I strongly believe that all providers should be implementing this in the treatment of eating disorders as it honors autonomy, individual needs, and acknowledges the client as the expert. Harm reduction is transformative and all clients deserve this type of care 🤍

we are often taught that are bodies are a problem, a project, or a work in progress. I’m here to tell you that your body is not the problem & has never been the problem.
The problem is fatphobia, weight bias, diet culture, patriarchy, capitalism, and many other things. Those are things that should change, your body doesn’t have too.

Your body is good exactly as it is 🫶🏼

Holidays can be especially difficult for people with eating disorders, as there can be increased focus & conversation on food.
If you find yourself struggling more, know that you are not alone - it’s really hard living in a world that is weight & body obsessed.
You are seen & loved.
You deserve to eat & deserve to be at peace with your body 🫶🏼

Older adults with eating disorders are a group that has been widely overlooked within the larger eating disorder community. In 2024, there is limited literature & research that seeks to understand the care needed for this population.
In my work with older adults with eating disorders, many experience deep feelings of shame, loneliness & are suffering in silence. They are deserving of providers who lead with compassion & who meet them wherever they are on their journey.

It sometimes feels like so much of the messaging in the world is about dieting, weight loss & about needing to change our bodies. It can feel hard to feel safe in our bodies when almost everywhere we turn we are told our bodies are a problem that needs to be fixed. There is so much change needed to happen in the world for it to be a safer, more equitable place. ALL bodies are deserving of safety 🤎 by @sarahdewysetherapy
