We’re thrilled to welcome Sarah Mika Esser and Michi Zaya to Project YZ, Yangtze Rep’s residency supporting the next generation of AAPI theatre makers.

Selected from a pool of 100+ AAPI artists, Sarah and Michi will spend the coming season developing bold new work that explores identity, community, grief, Queerness, and belonging.

We can’t wait to jumpstart their creative journeys and bring their ideas to life!

Sarah Esser is a choreographer, filmmaker, and dance educator based in Queens, NY. With a background spanning both the contemporary and commercial dance worlds, Sarah has honed a unique choreographic vocabulary that makes meaning through shape and tension and finds a home in the off-kilter. Sarah is known to create community within her classes, and she is passionate about facilitating inclusive spaces for finding empowerment through movement.

Teaching highlights include: Broadway Dance Center, Movement Lifestyle, Modega, TMilly, and more.

Performance highlights include: Kim Petras, J. Balvin, Encanto at the Academy Awards, Nike, The Sims, and more.
