#NewNoise: Brooklyn-based Iranian artist Sarah Khatami has released ‘Jannah’, a heartfelt single dedicated to the martyred children of Gaza.Known for her soulful blend of R&B, jazz, and pop, infused with textures of traditional Persian music, Khatami’s work often traverses the terrain between the personal and the political. From tales of love and heartbreak to reflections on identity and injustice, her songs reveal a deep curiosity about the human condition, expressed through poignant lyricism in both English and Farsi.In ‘Jannah’, she channels collective mourning through emotive storytelling that touches on themes of grief and despair as well as hope. The track’s minimal production, anchored by mellow keys and a wistful guitar riff, creates the space for Sarah’s raw, emotive vocals to take centre stage. “After witnessing many horrific images online, the only thing that brought me any source of comfort was imagining the martyred children in Jannah, or heaven, playing, laughing, and being kids. my dad was my introduction to poetry. he exposed me to the greats—Hafiz, Rumi, Saadi, the list goes on. he would read their verses into a microphone connected to a tiny speaker in our living room while my siblings and I sat in a circle around him, listening intently. sometimes he would read us his own poetry and in those moments, we were offered brief glimpses into his mind, his experiences, his life.many of you have heard me perform my musical reinterpretations of my dad’s poetry at various different shows, and I’m so so excited to share that I’ve recently received a fiscal sponsorship from @nyfacurrent to create a project I’ve been dreaming of forever. “Shaydaayi (شیدایی)” will be a collection of 5 of my dad’s original Persian poems reimagined as songs. through @nyfacurrent, I have received 501(c)(3) status, meaning that any donations made to my project will be fully tax deductible. if you’d like to donate, you can do so via the link in my bio🧿❤️‍🔥 by @sarahkhatami
