Josh, who died with so many others all those years ago, feels as if he’s part of the fabric of our beautiful, brave city. It’s painful but also so comforting to feel his presence in so many places that I love. I was walking through the Union Square subway station some months back when I came upon a wall where someone had put up stickers with the names of the victims of 9/11. There he was. I’m thinking of you, my dear friend, always and especially today. I want you to know that the people who loved you will remember you always. by @sarahlyall33

Writing the NYT thrillers column is a delight, but it was a thrill to take part in this podcast with my excellent Book Review colleagues. Bonus: I learned that one of them is married to a former homicide detective! Listen to find out who.

This was a joy of a story to report - full of long-lost documents, secret intrigue, and the chance to dig deep into the tumultuous events in the year before the American Revolution, when everything seemed up for grabs. Also, I knew very little about John Dickinson, who turns out to be a bit of a quiet hero and a man of deep and admirable principles. Even though he didn’t sign the Declaration of Independence, he fought in the war as a private - the only founding father to do so. And he was the first founding father to free all the enslaved people on his family’s plantation.

It will always be a thrill to appear on P.1! Also: It turns out that you can write 1,500 words on this interesting topic, and still barely scratch the surface. by @sarahlyall33

There aren’t many things that in person are actually far more spectacular and magnificent than all the descriptions have led you to believe.

In my experience: the Sydney Opera House. Michelangelo’s David. And now the giant Redwoods in Northern California, which I was so lucky to visit over the weekend. Look how incredible they are! You feel that they have a lot of things they’d like to say to us, especially right now. by @sarahlyall33

NOTES ON WESTMINSTER, DAY ONE: DOGS AND THEIR WEIRD HAIR

1 Both these dogs, for some bizarre reason, are examples of Chinese Cresteds. (Some are born mostly naked and are known as “hairless” and styled to look like My Little Pony; others are born with hair, look like something entirely different, and are known as “Powder Puffs.”) Do not ask me why this is.

2 and 3 A Pekingese, from both sides

4 Handler/dog esthetic confluence

5-8 Enjoy this alarming plethora of poodles

Here is Nick the Tibetan spaniel, a champion show dog who also works as a therapy dog in the memory-care unit of a senior living center in Vancouver, WA.

Not all Westminster dogs are conceited overachievers with fancy tails.
