“Autumnal is one of my favorite words”. 12”x16” gouache on linen.

Some people say that Southern California doesn’t have seasons, but I’d argue that autumn here is just more subtle, a nuanced transition period without all the obvious fanfare of deciduous trees. It starts with cooler mornings and evenings and gorgeous clear sunny days. Then the sunshine is interspersed with more cloud cover and fog, night comes earlier, the produce in the farmers market shifts into autumnal hues even if the leaves don’t. There’s plump purple grapes, yellow and orange and dark green colored squashes, pale green pears and pinkish apples, the browns of fresh walnuts and pecans. And I have many excuses to use the word autumnal to describe it all. This piece is an ode to all the subtle beauty of fall as I know it.

“When contented, linger”.
I realized I shared some process pics of this one but not the finished piece! These linework pieces to me are almost like a snapshot of my state of mind and mood while I made them. They remind me of functional MRIs where they can see which parts of your brain are lit up, but with paint I can convey mood and feelings and seasons and all the things. What do they make you think of or feel?

She’s done! I’m still working on a title, but otherwise feeling quite good about how this one turned out. Outfit matching the painting was not intentional lol.

Almost there…. I do love the way painting lines forces me to slow down. There’s no way to rush them, there’s not really much room for error, and slow is the only way to do it.

This painting is an extensive rework/reimagining of an old piece I never really loved (yes that’s a thing that happens). The heart of it still resonated with me though, as it was originally a meditation on imposter syndrome, and I wanted to find a way to salvage it. It went through many iterations, changes in color palette, and a general muddling my way through to something new. I’ve been sitting with it for a few weeks as is and it’s feeling like it might be done…so I figured I would share it because, for me, sharing about the process is just as important as sharing the actual finished work. The destination is the journey sometimes.

Coming along slowly but surely…Also I know working at the desk is so much easier on my body but it feels so constrained compared to working on the floor lol. Anyone else feel that struggle??

I’m loving how this gouache paint is drying on the linen! It’s so plush and textured and I’m so looking forward to continuing to work on this piece 🤩.

It’s been a while since I actually had time to paint, and boy did it feel good today. Excited to be playing with this very autumnal color palette on this work in progress 🍂. And thanks @morningbecomeseclectic for introducing me to this song 🎧!
