POSTS STORIES REELS

‘Descending’ :
Yesterday, I went to see a sculptural pot by @lounicholsonceramics with Lou herself. It was amoungst other international art works at Wells Cathedral, an exhibition with the title Underneath. Lou’s piece talks of the sea. The interesting circle pulls you into the force of the wave, the bubbles of air rising to the surface. Lou originally had a formal architectural training, so her pieces play between her previous career and her love of land and sea. It’s tactile and creamy to touch, it has a power like the force of the sea and has a solid strength of sculptural beauty.

I too have a fascination with the sea and bought a pot from Lou called ‘Storm’ a few years ago. It sits proudly on my windowsill looking out from the new cottage. Do go to Wells Cathedral to see the exhibition of work and installations if you live nearby it’s on until the 7th November; it’s a wonderful building of magnificent beauty,
there are some thought provoking artworks by artists all over the World. I loved an installation by @charlotteausten_studio with 48 handmade stones and 72 individual bronze feathers on the Chapter House steps - I will show on stories later.
What I love about such exhibitions is the incredible diversity of creative thought and the heart of making. Most pieces are for Sale, including Lou’s ‘Descending’.

Thank you Lou for taking me.

Marigolds, Pumpkins, and Tomatoes:

The beginning of November - We have arrived at the season of evergreens, soups and jumpers here in Somerset. The leaves have turned with glorious colour for their last hurrah before falling to the floor and leaving the mighty branches to be seen again through misty days and walks shuffling through coloured wrinkled leaves.

In Pic 2 a picture by Anna-Meika Von Ogtrop who I remember with very fond memories who died a year ago. She was a brilliant artist who illustrated many books with her imaginative humour and talent, painted vibrant oils such as this tree of positive joy. She loved colour and wore it everyday even in hospital; it made her smile. She was a brave woman who battled the pains of scoliosis from the age of 14 in her back, carrying on in her quiet modest way, but always fought for the things that mattered to her.
She was a dear friend whom I miss greatly, but cherish many special memories.

In pic 4 two more pictures - On the windowsill is Terry Plackitt and the wood block by @gillstewartartist . The bowl decorated with yellow and blue Lavender is by myself.

Happy Monday all - I’m off to see a pot of a fine artist at Wells Cathedral.

Misty Mornings and Golden Trees:

November begins and the clock of time ticks on ……. pictures taken @homewoodbath at 7.00 in the morning walking through the vegetable garden, beautifully cared for by Darren @chef_gardener
A morning swim to start the day and get the joints moving into action. With Autoimmune diseases swimming is a brilliant way to support and help the body. It is the best exercise for my rheumatoid arthritis and starts the day brilliantly, I really recommend this gentle exercise for the body to people who enjoy the waters.

A Trusted Bowl In and outside:
Some last Dahlias from Julia @grownandgatheredbyjulia put together with some gorgeous Pyracantha orange berries from over the fence. A nature table of pure colour and texture even in a small leaf. A special @jillshaddock bowl that is perfect for flowers and reminds me of a happy day a while back now.

Traitors television last night was a real WOW with daring and courage by all the celebrities with dynamite and helicopters, but the end game of who can you Trust and who wins….was the heartwarming finish -

Faithfulness and loyalty is the WINNER . Yesssss 👏👏👏

Sculptural Beauty in the light:

What a beautiful gift from Julia @grownandgatheredbyjulia , grown by her on her flower farm. I have photographed it in the light, drawn it and will cook it too. Apparently to simply slice and cook in butter is delicious, but can be used like any other pumpkin baked, made into soup or any dish - I shall try on Halloween night.

New and Old:
I’m still using those little crabapples from a bucket of flowers from Alison @floralacre a few weeks ago now, also a couple of naturally dried dark Dahlias and some hips. A bowl with a re-jiggle, a new look, that’s how I can keep flowers going, still giving welcome. I take the same care taking the flowers out of the bowl at the end as I do putting them in, because that way precious flowers have their full time of being seen. They have been grown with care and deserve being looked after for the longest time, so…..fresh cold water and all is happy.

Two Pots with a Difference of Making:

The little wood fired costrell pot was hand thrown and made by Johnny Leach. This little traditional country pot with lugs was fired in a large three chambered kiln for 36 hours, reaching a temperature of about 1320. You can see on the pot a sheen from 60 ft flames that licked the pot over time. The stoneware clay is locally dug on the Somerset levels and perfect for a renowned domestic ware that has been enjoyed and sold all round the world for 60 years.

The Raku pot behind the costrell is made by Elizabeth Raeburn. The clay is rolled and slabbed, then beautifully assembled. It has 4 cubes of clay for feet, to lift it giving a lightness. The form is ovoid and fragile due to low temperature firing.
The firing is relatively quick going to 950 degrees. Liz opens the kiln door, with red heat inside, masked up with goggles and thick gloves. With tongs she lifts the glowing red pot and puts it into a mass of wood chip or shredded paper. This is a dangerous manoeuvre and needs the upmost care. The pot is gently rested down and is smothered in smoke with a reduction atmosphere. This sends the body of clay black and the glaze an aura of pink. The firing takes just a few hours, the pot is plunged into water to cool and the pot to be finished. After cleaning, its full beauty is revealed.

The individual work of both potters has taken a lifetime of skill and knowledge, an understanding of form, working with the clay and controlling fire to create pieces of excellence. Craftsmanship and creativity takes time and a passion within, it is hard work on the body and grounds you when things don’t always turn out, but being a maker is an irresistible joy that feeds your soul.

Two of the finest Modern Potters

I was bubbling with excitement to see this exhibition on Saturday @offerwaterman ending soon on the 30th, with the work of Lucie Rie and Hans Coper. It was a remarkable display of their brilliance as potters in the 20th century. Lucie Rie and Hans Coper had a deep friendship working together - in the early days Hans was guided by Lucie but then in mutual respect. They fulfilled large domestic orders in the mornings and worked on their own Indvidual work in the afternoons.
1: Lucie Rie and Hans Coper at Albion Mews
2. The work of both potters
3: Beaker by Hans and a stunning bowl and vase by Lucie.
4: Chunky volcanic glazed vases by Lucie
5: Porcelain hand thrown bowl and cylinder lidded jar by Lucie.
6. Black and white form by Hans Coper
7: Thinly thrown porcelain bowls with copper rims - The pink bowl broken in the firing but showing its thin throwing.
8. Bowls reflected in and out on glass mirror.
9: Hans Coper Cycladic forms
10: Trumpeting long necked vases and volcanic bowl.
11: Hans Coper ovoid forms with manganese decoration.
12: Forms by Hans Coper

It was Lucie Rie and her work that inspired me to become a studio potter. I was fortunate to be invited to Albion Mews and spend an afternoon whilst at college. She made one of her famous cakes (almond) and I have treasured that day ever since. A remarkable woman and talented potter. By sheer coincidence Hans Coper settled and lived with his family in Frome, Somerset in 1967.

Two of the finest Modern potters although Lucie said she was a potter, but Hans was an artist.

Lighter Mornings and Longer Nights
My swim this morning at 7.00 was not in the dark as the clocks had made lighter mornings again. The sun was spectacular today with the skies turning to blue. The wind is raging and my goodness it’s cold out there, but I hear on the radio others in the North and Scotland have very tricky conditions from our second storm Boelo hitting shores at 80 mph. It’s time to wrap up warm and stay safe.
Happy Sunday all.

A Gorgeous gift
When a flower farmer @bohemianbloomsuk brings an armful of her best Dahlias for a house warming gift, you know you’ve won the lottery!!!. The rains and winds have started down here in the South West with Storm Austen arriving today. Lou came over for lunch and brought these gorgeous flowers - Wow what kindness.
This large Saltglaze pot made in college days was perfect for these seasonal stems and photographed on the table outside in a moment of sunshine yesterday.

Looking Back
I don’t usually look back but this morning it’s dark and spitting with rain. We are getting ready for first storm Austin tomorrow, so I wondered what it was like last year.
