In the final stretch of this election, reliably red Texas is playing a major role in the battle for control of both the U.S. House and Senate.

It’s put a spotlight on San Antonio and South Texas, where Republicans redrew the maps to pick up congressional seats this cycle, but are now scrambling to shore up should-be-safe contests.

Here are the top races we're watching in the November 2026 midterm election. by @sareport

While the City Council was melting down over how to solve budget deficit last month, East Side Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez (D2) was locking down funding for some major projects in his historically underserved district.

A new senior center and public pool for the East Side is expected to break ground in 2029, while he’s also closing in on another city land acquisition for affordable housing.

Once a progressive outsider on a business-friendly dais, McKee-Rodriguez, 31, is now in his third term on a council filled with like-minded members.

Together they join a growing list of progressives nationwide who are channeling their national policy frustrations into grassroots solutions — while bucking the traditional economic development models that they say have long failed to deliver on their promises.

“Right now people are exhausted of the tension and conflict and arguing at all levels of government. We see it at the federal level and it’s exhausting, and then at the state level, it feels even worse sometimes,” McKee-Rodriguez said in a wide-ranging Sept. 14 interview.

A year ago, the city was looking down the barrel of $250 million in costs to improve the roadways and other infrastructure to support a new downtown Spurs arena.

Now it appears that line item has been cut to only $35 million.

The new estimate comes as San Antonio proposes a five-year bond program coming in at $442 million in 2027, about a third of the size of the $1.2 billion bond that was passed in 2022.

Director of Capital Improvements Mike Shannon said during a bond kickoff briefing to City Council that his department has identified $5.8 billion in potential projects for capital improvement citywide.

Opponents of a planned U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center marched through San Antonio’s East Side Saturday morning, taking their calls for local officials to challenge the facility directly to the warehouse where it is expected to open later this year.

Hundreds of people gathered at Davis Middle School on the East Side for the roughly 2.5-mile march along East Houston Street and Loop 410 where the nearly 640,000-square-foot warehouse is located at 542 S.E. Loop 410.

The demonstration comes as local elected officials have shifted from requesting information and opportunities for public input from the Department of Homeland Security toward potential legal pushback.

On Friday evening, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones announced that she would support legal action to halt work converting the warehouse into an immigration processing center after a Sept. 30 deadline for ICE to respond to the city’s questions passed without a response.

Getting into Friesenhahn Cave requires descending a 30-foot creaky metal ladder, through a narrow shaft that opens into a dark one-room cave. Water drips sporadically from its limestone roof, and the cave floor is a mixture of clay, mud and bones — some of them tens of thousands of years old.

Some of the most fearsome Ice Age predators used this cave as a den, dragging prey back into the cavern, accumulating one of the most well-preserved fossil records in North America.

These predators included giant short-faced bears, dire wolves and most famously the scimitar-toothed cat (Homotherium), which banded together to hunt young mammoths and other vulnerable animals.

Despite being internationally known by researchers and located just 20 minutes north of downtown San Antonio, most residents have never heard of the cave and its rare look at life during the late Pleistocene.

A slew of local taxing entities are raising their tax rates for the first time in many years — at the same time city-owned utilities are also closing in on potential rate hikes.

The San Antonio Report has been tracking what it all means for the average homeowner, who could pay $129 more per year so far in property taxes and other fees, according to our analysis at the conclusion of budget season.

That doesn’t include a likely rate hike for the City of San Antonio’s 2027 bond program, which the council will consider in October, and a CPS Energy rate hike, which doesn’t yet have a formal estimate.

In recent years, property owners have watched their valuations rise dramatically, often leading to higher property tax bills even as municipalities lowered their rates to stay under the state’s revenue caps.

Now the real estate market is softening at the same time inflation is rising, and an array of new state and local tax exemptions are keeping more taxable value off the rolls.

That’s left many Texas cities, counties and school districts debating tough spending cuts and rate hikes as revenue comes in far below expectations.
