Roseate Spoonbill
These newly hatched Roseate Spoonbill chicks were waiting for their parents.

During the first days after hatching, the chicks are blind and completely dependent on their parents. Both adults feed them by partially regurgitating food, and the chicks reach deep inside the parent’s bill to receive it.

Bald Eagle
Here, an adult returns to the nest where two eaglets patiently wait.

Swipe to see the full series.

eaglets depend on their parents for food and protection as they grow strong enough to fledge.

Bald Eagle eaglets remain in the nest for about 10–14 weeks.

Tricolored Heron
One of three young chicks patiently waiting for a parent to return with food.
Young Tricolored Herons spend several weeks in the nest, relying entirely on their parents for food. During this time, they grow quickly as their fluffy down is gradually replaced by juvenile feathers before they are ready to fledge. taken in St. Augustine, Fl. by @sarymely

Sandhill Crane
I took this photo during a light drizzle. After the crane shook the water from its feathers, I decided to use a tighter crop to highlight the feather detail.
The red crown is one of the Sandhill Crane’s most recognizable features. From the right angle, it can look like a perfect heart. Sandhill crane close up taken in Riverbend Park by @sarymely

Eastern Screech-Owl
I heard both screech-owls calling to each other, I was looking for them when this owl emerged from its hiding spot and perched on an open branch, carefully looking around while calling to its mate.
I could hear her calling back nearby, but I never spotted her. I looked around to see if a raptor was nearby, but couldn’t find anything. A few moments later, he quietly disappeared back into the trees.

I’ve been following the local Red shouldered Hawk families this season and have enjoyed watching the different stages of their nesting cycle. After spending so much time observing them, I’ve learned to recognize the parents by their behavior and favorite perches, even before noticing their bands.

This young hawk was calling loudly for food. Even after leaving the nest, juvenile Red-shouldered Hawks can remain dependent on their parents for several weeks while they learn to hunt within the family territory.

Soon, the parents will gradually stop providing food, encouraging the juveniles to become independent and begin life on their own. taken in Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden by @sarymely

I’ve been following the Yellow crowned Night Heron nesting activity at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden more closely this season.

So far, I’ve documented at least 12 chicks across multiple nests, with possibly more still too small to confirm in one of them.

This morning, thanks to the chicks’ calls, I found and photographed a newly discovered nest in a different area of the garden, with 3 chicks peeking out from inside the nest while warm morning light illuminated the mangroves in the background.

Green Heron
After a territorial chase between three Green Herons, this one landed on a low palm branch.
The light was perfect for a low key moment as he paused, looking up for any visitor.
