I genuinely thought that getting a Master’s abroad would make finding a job easier. For the last 3 years, I’ve been struggling with the question: “Am I building a life here, or am I just refusing to admit that I should go back?”
⠀
- You can have a degree from a good university and still be told: “We’re looking for someone with experience.” And you’re sitting there thinking… okay, but how exactly am I supposed to get that first experience if nobody gives me the chance?
- You start realizing that “having qualifications” and “being employable” are two completely different things.
- You start questioning your career, your decision to move, your abilities, sometimes even your decision to leave home.
- Home starts looking better from far away. You remember the people you knew, the jobs you could probably get more easily. You forget the reasons you wanted to leave.
- You just spent another evening refreshing job boards, wondering what you’re doing with your life.
- Sometimes you don’t even want your dream job anymore. You just want one person to take a chance on you so you can finally stop feeling like you’re proving that you deserve to be here.

Things that make sense if you’re an immigrant

- You miss home most when something randomly reminds you of it.
- You can speak the language and still feel like an outsider.
- Making friends as an adult is hard. Making them in another culture is harder.
- Sometimes you don’t miss your country, you miss who you were there.
- You can go back home and somehow feel like a foreigner there too.
- A 10-minute call with someone from home can fix your entire mood.
- A doctor’s appointment can take 10x more mental energy than it should.
- You can love your new country and complain about it every single day.
- “Where are you from?” becomes a complicated question.
- You realize that home isn’t always a place anymore.

I live abroad. Every time, my family tells me they feel sorry for me. That I shouldn’t go through something I can’t do or try too hard.

Work jobs I didn’t want. Degrees. Apply for hundreds of jobs. Working nights.
⠀
I don’t think they want to be cruel. They watched me struggle for 5 years, and it hurts them.
⠀
- Being told you can’t do something doesn’t mean you can’t. It means they can’t watch you try.
- Your family not believing in you doesn’t mean they don’t support you. They’re scared for you.
- You can love someone and still not listen to them.
- Goals don’t have to change just because someone else is tired of waiting.

I don’t know if it’s going to work. I just have goals I want to achieve. I do my best. I rely on God.

I think about famous people who were rejected over and over, told they weren’t good enough. But they kept going.

4 reasons why this country should be your next stop 🤍

Probably one of my favorite trips. For once, I stopped trying to control everything and just relaxed. I’m so happy I got to experience all of this with my bestie with whom you can laugh, cry over a sunset, be terrified in a cable car, and look for the best seafood.

1. People 🤍
They genuinely help each other. You can ask for directions and someone will walk you there instead of just saying “I don’t know”. Sometimes you even don’t need to ask.

2. Landscapes 🌊⛰️
We crossed the country from north to south, seeing places I probably would never have found on my own.

3. Feeling of home 🏡
The local community feels like a big family, who welcome you as if you had always been part of it and make you feel at home 🤍

4. Trust ✨
Doors are left open. Kids of 6-8 y.o. can go buy ice cream at night. You don’t have to worry about your belongings or about what might happen.

Maybe that’s what I loved most about Montenegro, it reminded me that life can be simple, warm, and human. If you’re planning a trip around the Balkans, put it on your list

Moved abroad. Spent 3 years to find a job. Feeling lost, struggling to make friends.

People back home were getting married, buying houses, cars, having kids…And I kept thinking “What am I doing with my life?”

But we’re just living a different life. Not everything has to happen by 25. Not everyone has the same timeline.

When you finally get there… you don’t feel like it was difficult anymore. We often underestimate our achievements and downplay how much growth happened in the messy years.

The moments you wanted to give up, they weren’t wasted time. You’re just on a path that requires a little more time and efforts. And that’s okay 🤍 by @sasha.hearth
