This is one of the coolest shows I have been part of! “abecedary” Curated by @darling_green_studio

Just as living with art in residential spaces changes our environment and experience of daily life, this group show was installed in a classroom, transforming mundane and overlooked academic spaces.

Students engaged with the art and learned alongside the works! taken in Brooklyn, New York by @sashahallock

I love the quiet after a show. The return to the cloistered solitude and pleasure of painting. Dark and cold these winter days, time for reflection and hope, making and seeking. by @sashahallock

Looking back and grateful.

Thank you to everyone who made the trip to Hudson to see my show with @susan_lisbin @sefa_gallery which closed at the end of November.

Shows are a team effort—Susie and Liz you are the best. Thank you for believing in my work and helping to share it with the world!

To my friends and family—thank you for supporting me, helping with logistics, and being my companions.

And to each person who felt moved by the work and wanted to live with it in their homes, thank you!

Ink on paper with handmade maple frame

This drawing is a study in reverse, modeled after the painting of the same size and name.

Intuitive, responsive building, one mark leading to the next with a few references to the forms in the painting.

“Twenty Years”
12”x12”
Ink on Paper
2025

Drawing is the foundation and precursor to my paintings. I developed this abstract language of drawing twenty years ago during art school. Drawing is incredibly vulnerable: there is only ink and paper. There is no going back, there is no erasing or layering, like in painting. What you see is what you get, one take, total focus. They take trust, my hand moves with the muscle memory of thousands of hours, it is a dance of faith, of playing, remembering what it was to draw as a child, while also bringing all I have experienced since then to bear. This is my first time showing my drawings at the gallery.

The frame was handmade by Joshua Eberle, a skilled wood worker in Alexandria, Virginia. It is solid maple with splined corners. It is a collaboration between dear friends. I met Josh during my freshman year of art school 20 years ago. I view these drawings and frames as complimentary objects, each a work of seasoned hands, speaking to craftsmanship, quality, and intricate beauty. The wood chosen for these frames each contains what is called “Chatoyancy”. This shimmering effect is caused when the tree is under stress as it grows, causing the grain to curl back on itself. It is highly prized by woodworkers for its unique visual characteristics.

The works on paper are made with light-resistant, archival Japanese ink and are framed with acid free archival materials. The paper is lightly coated with a UV protectant varnish from Switzerland and is protected again by a high-end UV resistant/ non-glare gallery acrylic from Acme Plastics, made locally in Woodlawn Park, NJ.

Sharing some detail images of Sasha Hallock’s available work in the exhibition “Do You Hear Me - One Day We Will Fly.” This show pairs Hallock’s newest paintings, oil on linen, with Susan Lisbin’s large oil paintings; it is on view at SEFA Hudson through November 30th.

Hallock’s attention to detail is incredible as he dives into color spectrums and patterns in these new works. Come visit us at 433 Warren Street if you are Upstate this weekend!

Please contact liz@susaneleyfineart.com with any questions.

Oil on linen
2023-2025

Almost two years ago, after my last show at SEFA on the Lower East Side, I began work on my largest painting to date.

In order to grow, I believe we often have to make ourselves uncomfortable. I had become very competent at making small paintings.

With that competency came security and a sense of control over my craft. I decided scale would be the variable to lead me into unknown artistic territory and cause me to reconsider my assumptions, grasp for new ways of seeing, and develop new skills and techniques to make paintings.

This painting feels like a milestone for me. Conceived over the course of almost two years, it is a work of devotion and perseverance. Often I felt like I was alone in a row boat, paddling through thick fog, unable to see more than a few feet ahead of me. This lack of control taught me important lessons.

At the same time, this painting came into being in community. I am grateful for the congregation of Resurrection Brooklyn for the space and support to make this work and the many friends and artists who visited my studio and gave thoughtful feedback along the way. Even into the last few weeks of painting I was sending photos to friends asking for advice.

Thank you to Susie and Liz at the gallery for trusting in me and believing in this work.

“Joy Comes in the Morning”
12”x12”
Oil on linen
2025

This title comes from Psalm 30, “Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning”

It is echoed in Tolkien:

“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tower high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him.

For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty forever
beyond its reach.”
