Our very first picture together.
This was actually the first time we officially met. You had been here for a few hours, but I needed a little extra care. You’d already had a chance to meet your Dad, Grandma & Poppa, and Auntie Shannon. When I finally made my way back to you, I’ll never forget your Dad handed you to me for the very first time. I unwrapped you from the snuggly swaddle that your dad would come to master and just sat in awe. I touched your little face, your arms, your legs, all your fingers and toes. Admiring this new little angel that had found his way into our lives.
Your 10 fingers & 10 toes have grown so much since that day but one thing hasn’t changed; You still leave me in awe. I sat back and admired you again this weekend. I saw this man that has now replaced my little boy. This 21-year old running around the basketball court with such pride. A constant smile from ear to ear as I watched you in your element. To hear the people you work with speak so highly of you and emote such enthusiasm when telling me how great you are. For you to be so thoughtful on your birthday as to make sure you got your Dad on the Jumbotron just so you could let everyone know that he is “Dad of the Game”.

Aidan, words cannot ever explain just how much I love and adore you. You are the best thing I’ve done and ever will do with my life. Thank you for continuing to want to spend your special day with us.
Happy 21st Birthday to you, My Love
I love you more than the ocean as deep and the mountains are wide.

10 Years.
I rang that bell so loud.
I cried happy tears and I held my homemade sign so proud. Ringing the bell signifies the end of chemo, the end of your treatment, the end of your battle. No matter how happy I was to ring that bell, to stop being pumped full of Killer Kool-Aid, to stop the nausea that felt like snakes rolling around in my stomach, you start growing my hair back! Nothing prepared me for the new journey I was about to embark on.
In the cancer community the discussion of your “new normal” is a big one. What does life after cancer look like? What is your new normal? The answer is obviously different for everyone, but does it mean for me?
First and foremost, there is no life “after” cancer. Cancer is always there.
Some days it lingers quietly in the quiet corners of my mind.
Some days it roars loud like a lion
Some days it is my ultimate strength
Some days it is my ultimate weakness.

In the decade since I rang the bell I have watched Aidan graduate from public school, high school with honours and move on to college/university. i have watched him build a life with his beautiful girlfriend and my 2 grand-kitties. I have strengthened my marriage by making it a top priority when the world got way too crazy. I have travelled through Europe, visited 20 states, and 4 provinces. I have built a new career and built new friendships. I have had major wins and major losses. I have had moments of self-doubt and survivors guilt.

The reality is life just kept moving.
Life kept throwing me soft balls that I would hit out of the park and lemons that I would make lemonade out of.

In the 10 years since I rang that bell I have learned that life is what you make it. What happened to me 10 years ago does not dictate my life now. It has helped bend and mold me into the Leah you see standing here today. With all her flaws, scars, fears, hopes, dreams, smiles, and ultimately, out loud laughter.

This is my new normal ❤️ by @sassy_le
