holy and melancholic friuli-venezia giulia. the Virgin rides a cloud as she is raised to heavens. there is a great mystery in green waters. water here is always trying to touch you, occupy some more space than it already has. Venice messes up with you sense of time and you suddenly feel almost ancient. then you board a train and breath out with relief to go away from the noise and with sadness, because you going away out of republic of pirates and rascals. Trieste is great place for exile, always has been like this. boras, strong cold winds, come here and make you seek a place to stay. this was a perfect city for landless aristocrats, i think. now there are plenty of vintage stores with porcelain and leftovers of austrian luxury. they are not selling off their past, they just don’t think it is valuable enough to be promoted. people just hide there on the remnants of all kinds of empires and drink coffee. coffee is good here. taken in Friuli-Venezia Giulia by @sasteper

i miss my sunny riviera, huge fishes caught in the sea and hidden in all those small fish shops, cappuccino in the morning and negroni sbagliato in the evening with same old italians sitting at the same tables (do they ever leave?), cold dive in the sea before the day begins, light smoothed by the curtains and the whole subtlety time being over. this is italy and france in september. taken in French Riviera by @sasteper

it is so great that there are places where you feel like a guest, not a customer or a client. i was a guest at @chateau_equilly

i saw so much beauty there. i think this is a thing with old places and homes. it is so easy to turn them into museums, leaving no room for comfort and never using things for their original purposes. here, it was different. and it was only possible because of the château team’s efforts and vision.

they have a real eye for making small details memorable during your stay. beautiful knives in the kitchen, solid shower sets and faucets that feel heavy in your hand, restored paintings, fresh bread in the kitchen, vintage but fully functional door knobs. they leave the common living spaces open without fetishising the space in an attempt to make it seem more valuable. they don’t need to. they could overwhelm you with history, but they don’t need to, because you can see it with your own eyes.

the memory of opening the old wooden windows in the grey dawn of a new morning and hearing the quiet of this château will stay with me.

my photo notes of portugal scribbled on film. there was this delicate and exceptional kind of yellow and brown everywhere. we bought oysters at continente on our second day. Lisa sweared and chipped her nails trying to crack them open with blunt knife. Dad came downstairs and finally did it. great oysters, rich in taste and surprisingly plump. we paired them with the cheapest brut cava from the same continente. i loved the simplicity of our trip. same clothes, because we needed very little beside swimsuits. we did not change our menu and had tuna and salad everyday in different variations. i experienced peace of mind there. we had our family kindhearted adventures everyday. taken in Algarve, Portugal by @sasteper
