The Melkonian educational institute was an Armenian boarding school in Cyprus, founded by the Melkonian brothers (who were Tobacco traders and Armenian benefactors) in the 1920s. Over the course of its operation for 75+ years the school welcomed Armenian students from 40+ countries. It was the only international Armenian boarding school of its kind. It served as a meeting place where young Armenians formed lifelong friendships, and in some cases even found their life partners.

The grounds consist of 2 quite large, similar buildings, and another building which has since been sold. The buildings have engravings of the Armenian alphabet, and the grounds are decorated with statues of great Armenians including Mesrop Mashtots, General Andranik Ozanyan, Komitas etc. Next to the school there is a forest of cypress trees, which were planted by some of the first students, in memory of their loved ones and others who did not survive the Genocide. The grounds are also the final resting place of the Melkonian brothers.

The school, owned and operated by AGBU, closed its doors in 2005, much to the dismay of alumni, and parents of prospective students worldwide. It ceased operation for financial reasons.

I know the subject has been closed for quite some time, but seeing the school firsthand, deserted and empty, was disheartening to say the least. The only word that comes to mind is ափսոս… հազար ափսոս։ Imagine having a boarding school for armenian diasporan kids which is just a 2 hour flight away from armenia itself… I can’t help but wish that with enough support and encouragement from our community globally, AGBU may revisit the issue, and the doors of this school can once again be opened to Armenian children and teens from around the world. taken in Nicosia, Cyprus by @sat_titude

2023 was brutal. It was a year of grieving - for one of my closest friends, and for Artsakh. I can’t stop talking about my friend… but I almost can’t speak about Artsakh. As well as ineffable heartbreak, that loss comes with guilt, and shame. More than what is tangible or quantifiable-we lost an ideal. The name itself became synonymous with pride, victory, honor, justice. The pride of generations: a beautiful dream turned reality only to once again be out of reach. I’ll never get over it.

The first 9 months of 2023 were clouded over by the torturous anxiety surrounding the blockade.
And then, before we knew it - a fresh attack began, and ended.Tepid questions of “what next?” were quickly answered with a mass exodus of Armenians from Artsakh. Though it felt final, I refuse to accept that it is.
Immediately, those less impacted jumped into aid mode, doing what they could to help. It was a strange, almost manic, yet also completely natural response to what had occurred. Focusing on the impact one could have made it possible to move from day to day. I could not permit myself to fall into misery due to some simple truths:I had not lost my home, possessions or any family member-all I could do was try to help. The “processing” would have to come later. It still hasn’t-I’m not sure it will.

Armenians say «լավից լավն էլ կա վատից վատն էլ»: The anguish during the blockade felt all consuming-but I look on photos of that time and think “at least we still had Artsakh”. I look at photos before this summer and think “at least my friend was still alive”.
Before the “dust had settled”, a different but somewhat comparable tragedy began to unfold in Gaza… I couldn’t help but think “at least the Artsakhtsis are alive”. In the face of the kind of hatred espoused against us in azerbaijan-they easily could have not been. վատից վատն էլ կա😭

It isn’t especially insightful or profound to say “don’t take anything for granted” or “appreciate what you have in the moment”- it’s just cliche. But it really hits different when life slaps you with hard lessons to teach you why adages exist. Here is me hoping that though they are not always easy to live by, I can try to do a better job of it. taken in Արցախի Հանրապետություն by @sat_titude

a cheat-sheet for the semantics dos and don’ts when talking about the tragedy that has transpired in Artsakh.

This is not comprehensive… words matter. If i see the word “separatists” one more time i will scream. by @sat_titude
