Pikes Peak Hill Climb has been on my radar for such a long time (“SHIT, I missed it AGAIN), I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve gone despite having lived in Denver for the past 5 years…

Having been now, I absolutely can believe how this is the first time Ive made it to the Race to the Clouds.

For first-timers, navigating buying tickets, carpooling, whether to camp, where to camp, and how long for practically demands the experience of having already done it before. I left Denver at midnight and was in line at 1:45am to get up to Pits/Turn 1 parking. After parking and waiting for the shuttle, we finally got to the pits a little after 4am—still practically the dead of night. Even though the race is in June, at ~9,000 feet above sea level it was a frosty “morning.” The weather varies chaotically at altitude with rain and hail frequent features. We got lucky this time around with mostly clear conditions and a beating hot sun (I only got cooked a little.. with SPF 50 on).

And that’s just a little one day tourist taste of the ~week-long experience teams have preparing, building, testing, fixing, practicing, testing again, practicing more, qualifying, and final preparations before actually sending it up America’s most legendary “hill” on Sunday.

This race doesn’t invite you to come.
You have to be determined to go.

And I will never miss it again.

So excited for @pikespeakhillclimb this weekend I had to make something and big ass graphic posters have been the flavor of the month. I’ve added a bit of the messy behind the scenes process because instagram loves that shit and hopefully you do too!

Unfortunately I have yet to have been to this event… so I borrowed an incredible shot from @trevorlydenphoto to serve as the backbone of the design (poster is not for sale, simply an exercise!)

Im still not sure how to describe the single-color serif-forward typography style that I employed here, but Ive heard it referred to as “Y2K” or Graphic Index. Either way I love it as a vehicle to convey all of the badass stats and details about this legendary 12 mile climb into the clouds.

So much so that i went a little overboard with the details and felt that “some” was better than “all” because Trevor’s image was just so perfect I didn’t want to take away from it.

Hence, sliding everything down off the image and below felt like the right move.

From there I spiced things up with some halftones from my favorite photoshop plugin, @doronsupply ‘s “Dithertone.” There is no better way to create print-ready LIVE graphics than with this tool. Cant recommend it enough.

Not only did I use the tool to generate the halftone effect, but also to shift the colors in the direction of Pikes Peak’s palette—specifically the navy.
