The Swedish West Coast - autumn vibes - the lobster season kicked off on Monday morning this week, and tonight it’s time for the annual lobster dinner. Freshly boiled lobster, a really good Albariño, and the ocean right outside. The water is getting a bit cooler, but it’s still perfectly swimmable. A weekend in Stockholm. Time with the kids, lunch at Tranan, dinner at our favourite — Bistro Mirabelle, run by two guys from Gothenburg ”in Exile” 😂 — the fantastic Brassaï exhibition at Moderna Museet. And, of course, a little vintage shopping… my son tried to convince his father that he absolutely needed yet another vintage Barbour jacket from Thriftin’, a great vintage shop on Rörstrandsgatan — run, appropriately enough, by an Englishman.#Stockholm #family #modernamuseet #barbour #bistromirabelle by @saturdaygigs

Saturday. Took the boat in for winter storage. Always a little bittersweet — a quiet reminder that summer is officially over. Bought some crayfish, found a Albariño in the basement, and discovered that Cleo Sol dropped a new album. Visited the group exhibition featuring Asger Jorn and Per Kirkeby at the Nordic Watercolour Museum on our way up to the summer house. It’s the final weekend of the exhibition. Mink DeVille - always associated with the CBGB punk scene but the band had more in common with uptown soul and romantic doo-wop with Latin-infused street rock influences. One of my favourite bands from the era. I was lucky to see the band once and Willy solo a few times. The first four albums are all classic stuff and ”Le Chat Bleu” released in ’80 is a masterpiece IMO. His solo efforts have its ups and downs, but the first two are definitely worth listening to. ”It’s closing time in this nowhere café - There’s no way in the world I’m gonna let that girl - Let her slip away”. He was one of the last romantics for sure.

DYNAMITE SHAKERS – I’m not much of a connoisseur on French rock. However, this young band is really awesome. Classic garage rock with influences from The Fleshtones, Flamin’ Groovies and my old French favourites, Dogs. I can also hear traces of Téléphone, another great French band from a different era. I would love to see them at some small club somewhere late one night. Their new album, Marilyn, was released today. An unemployed, well-educated young Englishman in Paris starts at the bottom of the restaurant world as a “runner.” An entertaining and somewhat enlightening account of a unglamorous existence. It definitely has more in common with George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and London than Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential. I have worked exactly one (1) evening in the restaurant business in my entire life. At a Michelin Guide restaurant. As a dishwasher. It was a bet with the owner. Way Out West 2026 – a Saturday with some highlights and one or two disappointments. The undisputed highlight was Ezra Collective. They have a song called “God Gave Me Feet For Dancing” – the perfect description of the band. Pure joy !! Local favourites Terra put on a fantastic show in front of a more than enthusiastic crowd. Lila Iké was also exciting, although she had to contend with a somewhat sleepy afternoon audience. I borrowed the first photo from my brother-in-law. It sums up Ezra Collective really well. My final was Svart Ridå. I’d heard a lot of positive things about them, and they definitely lived up to the hype. #wayoutwest #ezracollective #terra #svartridå by @saturdaygigs

Way Out West 2026 kicks off on Thursday, but this year I’ll only make it there on Saturday. The photo is from 2015 — my daughter’s first festival. She was 17, and the time was 3:50 in the morning. Like father, like daughter. This year, I’m planning to see Ezra Collective, Saint Etienne, Lila Iké, Gorillaz, Joe Armon-Jones, and local favourites Terra and Sylvie’s Head. Valter Nilsson’s show at Bananpiren last night was a manifestation in front of 12,000 people. Down at the front, we all know every word ; on some songs, he barely needs to sing at all. Just a year ago, he was playing small local clubs to crowds of 50, with half the audience made up of friends. It was a great night for sure.

”Murder in Paris ’68” by journalist Edward Chisholm. With a shady past and taste for bad company, Alain Delon lives on the edge. A dead body that turns out to be his associate. Questions begin to be asked. True crime. Makes me think of ”In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote. A captivating story and a truly great summer read. Death and glamour is sometimes all I need.
