Yes, but...

Most people think of Portugal as Portugal sunsets, surf, pastel streets in Lisbon, wine in Porto or summer holidays in the Algarve. And oh yes, I love that Portugal too.

(Follow @saudalicious for slow travel and soulful Portugal inspiration)

But the Portugal that raised my heart looks different.
It smells like churrasco on a random Thursday, open doors during our village festival, tables always too full of food, fruit picked straight from the trees, neighbors showing up with bags of tomatoes or figs, long family lunches that somehow turn into the whole afternoon, and dusty inland roads with almost no tourists around.

As a child, I spent every summer here in the village where my mother was born, the same village where we live now. And every year I cried when we had to drive back home. I never wanted to leave.

Now when people ask where in Portugal we live, they usually guess Lisbon or the Algarve first. And the confused look when we say it’s the inland always makes me smile a little. Because for me, this is the Portugal that feels the most alive. Pure, imperfect, slow and deeply rooted. The place that has always felt like home. ā™„ļøšŸ™šŸ¼ taken in Portugal by @saudalicious

A more personal post than I usually share, and one that feels a little scary to put out there.

I’m sharing my story because low ferritin is a more common issue than many people realise. I’m still searching for answers, but I know that for some women, the cause may be found much sooner.

I hope my story encourages other women to ask questions, speak up about their symptoms and keep looking for answers when something doesn’t feel right. Because sometimes, taking that first step can make all the difference.

Have you experienced something similar?

I’d love to hear your story too. taken in Portugal by @saudalicious

One day in Figueira da Foz 🌊

We spent one day exploring Figueira da Foz, and somehow managed to pack quite a lot into it.

We started with a walk along the boulevard, before walking back through town. It was such a nice way to get a first feel for Figueira da Foz, with plenty of space to walk and the ocean always nearby.

For lunch, we went to @olaias.figfoz, a restaurant we'd been following on Instagram for a while. We'd seen so many beautiful rice dishes there, so we knew we wanted to try one.

We went for the baked rice with wild corvina, mussels and prawns, and it was honestly so good. Crispy on top but wonderfully creamy underneath, with perfectly cooked fish and seafood. We also had the couvert with freshly made sourdough bread, butter and olives, followed by the squid. Everything was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious.

After lunch, we stopped for coffee at @bookva_coffee. The coffee was really good, and the food looked just as tempting. We didn't get to try any of it this time, but that's definitely on the list for our next visit.

From there, we drove through the Serra da Boa Viagem, stopping at several beautiful viewpoints along the way, including Miradouro da Bandeira, with stunning views over the coastline.

We then went towards Buarcos for a little more exploring before continuing to Praia da Murtinheira.

And this might have been our favourite part of the day. A huge sandy beach surrounded by dunes, with those beautiful green mountains rising up behind it. At sunset, we had the beach almost completely to ourselves. We played some beach tennis, played with Jessy and just enjoyed being there. One of those simple moments that makes a day away feel really special. 🄰

We also noticed just how much there is to do around Figueira da Foz. Padel courts, outdoor sports, picnic areas, walking routes, beaches and plenty of nature. It really feels like a great place for an active outdoor escape, not just a city break.

One day was definitely not enough. There is still so much more we want to explore around Figueira da Foz, so we'll definitely be back.

And if you have any tips, let us know!šŸ‘‡šŸ¼ taken in Figueira da Foz by @saudalicious

A few more glimpses of @thealtoparaiso 🌿

We loved the old-school character of this beautiful family home, from the original furniture and natural materials to all the little details that have been so carefully preserved.

And that garden… a dream. So many fruit trees, winding paths and quiet corners to enjoy, plus a sauna tucked away in all that greenery.

Add delicious homemade breakfasts, the warmest hosts Paula & Spencer and a great location for exploring the Silver Coast, and it’s easy to see why we loved our stay here.

We left Meia Casca genuinely impressed. šŸ’›

Last weekend we decided to go out for a lovely dinner, and since we were so close to the sea, we went for a seafood evening. And what a good decision that was.

We’ve honestly never had shellfish quite like this. So incredibly fresh, beautifully prepared and full of flavour. The combinations were thoughtful without taking away from the ingredients themselves.

We also loved the open kitchen. Being able to watch the team prepare and plate the dishes right in front of you made the whole experience even more special.

The ceviche was delicious, but our favourites were definitely the Polvo aĢ€ Meia Casca, a beautiful combination of octopus and shellfish, which was Dennis’ favourite, and the secretos de porco preto with berbigão and coriander, my favourite. Such a lovely combination of flavours.

We paired everything with a beautiful Portuguese wine and, of course, ended with dessert. The farófias with coconut cream and roasted pineapple were an absolute surprise. Light, delicate and so, so good.

A real recommendation if you’re exploring this part of the Silver Coast, just outside Lourinhã and south of Peniche.

@meiacascarestaurante is definitely one to put on your list šŸ˜

The combination of old-school charm and modern comforts on Portugal’s Silver Coast.

We really loved our stay at @thealtoparaiso, an old family home where so much of the original character has been beautifully preserved, while still offering everything you need for a comfortable stay.
The house is filled with beautiful old furniture, natural stone, wood and little details that make it feel like you’re stepping into another time.

And the garden was a dream. 🌿 So many fruit trees, winding paths and little places to spend the day outside. We especially loved picking fruit straight from the trees and relaxing in the sauna surrounded by all that greenery.

Paula and Spencer are incredibly kind and welcoming, and were always happy to help with anything we needed. Breakfast was different every day too, with lots of homemade treats and little surprises.

The location is also great for exploring the Silver Coast, with Peniche, Lourinhã and Areia Branca nearby, and Óbidos easy to reach.

Our first day exploring this beautiful part of Portugal, just south of Peniche, and what a good start to our little weekend away. šŸ¤Ž

Today we spent the day around Lourinhã, exploring the area and spending some time by the ocean at Praia da Peralta. Slow wandering, good food, beautiful places and plenty of time outside. Exactly how we like to travel.

And the last photo is actually where we’re staying this weekend. šŸ‘€ You can have a look at our stories to see more of our stay, plus the lovely places we ate and had drinks at today.

And now, about the outfit…

This beautiful linen set was a gift from Jiwa Bali, a small brand created by Paulina, who designs every piece in Bali using 100% natural linen.

I really connected with the story behind the brand. Paulina describes how Bali gave her that feeling of stillness and of coming home to yourself. And I know exactly what she means, because that’s how Portugal feels to me. The slower pace, the nature, the simplicity and that feeling of being exactly where you’re meant to be.

I’ve also slowly been filling more and more of my wardrobe with linen. I love how breathable and natural it feels, how beautifully it moves and how effortlessly beautiful it is.

So when this set arrived, I was instantly in love.

Jiwa means soul in Indonesian, which feels like such a beautiful name for a brand inspired by slowing down, feeling more and living with intention.

A very sweet gift from Paulina, and this post is my little gift back.

A little Alentejo dream we were lucky enough to experience before anyone else.

Hidden among the rolling hills near Mértola, we found a place that felt like home.

A place where traditional Portuguese charm meets modern comfort, with an interior where every detail has been carefully chosen.

We loved waking up to the sound of the rooster, watching the neighbours' chickens wander by, enjoying breakfast with regional products, and looking out over the rolling Alentejo hills where the Herdade's own sheep grazed beyond the pool.

Of course, we also couldn't resist revisiting magical Mértola, one of our favourite villages in Portugal.

While Herdade de Algaes has welcomed guests for years in its beautiful rooms and holiday home, we stayed in their newest addition: a private house designed for those seeking even more space, privacy and slow living. There are still a few final touches being added, but the atmosphere and experience are already something truly special.

Could you see yourself slowing down here?

Thank you @herdadealagaes for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to experience this beautiful new retreat.

How did we only discover this beach now? šŸ¤Ž

Nazaré has always been our go-to beach from home. It’s less than an hour away, so when we just want a beach day without making a whole trip out of it, that’s usually where we end up.

We’ve been coming to Nazaré for years and usually prefer the quieter beach further north. But somehow, we had never really explored the coastline beyond Praia do Norte.

Until this weekend.

We finally drove a little further north and explored a few beaches along this stretch of coast. Two of them completely surprised us, and this one is Praia de Vale Furado.

Just 15 minutes from Nazaré. We couldn’t believe we had never been here before.

The cliffs and rock formations are beautiful, and the beach feels just big enough to fin your own little spot while still being surrounded by all that wild nature.

One little tip: check the tides before you go. 🌊 At high tide, there really isn’t much beach left. Around an hour or two before or after high tide is perfect.

And a little side note about my bikini šŸ¤Ž

I’ve finally found a bikini that isn’t made from plastic. This one is made from wool by @zubek.co, in the most beautiful chocolate brown colour. It feels so soft and comfortable that I happily kept it on all day, which is something I normally don’t enjoy with a plastic bikini.

And yes, Jessy loved the beach too. 🐾

We had such a beautiful day exploring this little stretch of coastline, and we’ll be sharing more places and tips from this area soon.

Have you ever explored the coast north of Nazaré?

We usually head straight to Nazaré, but we think we just found a new favourite spot on Portugal’s Silver Coast. šŸ•

Last week, we decided to explore a little more of the Silver Coast. Instead of our usual Nazaré day, we spent the day discovering new beaches and ended up at Nomad Pizza, just a few minutes from Praia de Vale Furado.

And what a spot. Such a relaxed vibe, great music, incredible sourdough pizzas and probably the most beautiful setting we’ve ever had pizza in. The cliffs and Atlantic views are absolutely stunning.

We were just a little sad we didn’t have our drone with us, because the cliffs were so beautiful. You don’t really get to see how impressive they are in this reel, so trust us, it’s even prettier in real life. 🌊

Our tip? Combine Nomad Pizza with a day at Praia de Vale Furado. The beach is seriously worth a visit, and pizza here afterwards is the perfect combination. One to save for later.

One more tip: book ahead! We reserved a little late, so the only table we could get was for a very early dinner. We couldn’t eat here at sunset, but it meant we ended the day with a beautiful sunset walk along the beach instead. šŸŒ…

Chilled atmosphere, good music, incredible views and seriously good pizza.

Save this for your next beach day on Portugal’s Silver Coast!
