Washington grows more than 90% of the nation's organic apples, almost entirely on the east side of the state. When Griffin Berger and his family planted apple trees at the base of Sauk Mountain, in eastern Skagit County, plenty of people doubted the climate would cooperate.

It did. Griffin's scientific rigor and respect for the land turned that gamble into a thriving farm. Regenerative practices keep the soil healthy, and a zero-waste philosophy puts every piece of fruit to use. Try Sauk Farm's organic Honeycrisp apples, cider, and dried apples.

Meet the folks from Sauk Farm this Friday, Sept. 18, when they visit both Co-op locations to hand out samples of their organic Honeycrisp apples, and get a taste of how perfect growing conditions can make all the difference in flavor.

🍎 HERE WE GOOOO…..
.
It’s that time of year again folks. We kicked off harvest this week with doing a selective color picking of our organic Honeycrisp apples. Join us for 2 minutes to see how it is done with our Technofruit CF-105 harvest platform. Good apples go on the belts bad apples go in the bin up top to be turned into juice!
.
After harvesting, the apples have to sit for 5 days to off gas and acclimate. Our first order of apples will be going out to the @pugetsoundfoodhub this Tuesday so you can expect to see our apples out at your local Co-op and @haggenfood by the end of the week. If you don’t, let us know and let your store know. Your voice makes a difference!
.
Fresh Organic Apples available every Saturday @bhamfarmersmkt as well!!!

🍏Before and After Fruit Thinning + Field Finds
.
We completed fruit thinning last month and ran into a number of these massive clusters we had to begrudgingly thin to a few fruitlets. We do a number of treatments to prevent the tree from wasting its energy growing fruit we will end up removing. Thinning treatments are only so accurate so we have to go through by hand to adjust the counts accordingly to what the tree can support.
.
If you have fruit trees in your backyard we’d recommend you thin them too. Properly thinned trees will result in a good fruit quality and return crop the next year. Thin apples to one fruit per cluster and remove any fruit within the width of a fist 👊. Each apple should have a good amount of space around it for air flow, sunlight, and room to grow.

Spread the Dry Blends
.
As our fruit trees begin to wake from their Winter slumber, it is time to set the soil up for a good growing season. Based on the soil tests taken last month we are amending the nutritional and conducive profile of the soil. The big things we focus on are pH stability, calcium, phosphorus, boron, magnesium, and zinc. Setting the soil up for success is critical because it gives the trees and microbes in the soil, a stable foundation to build themselves and the crop with.
.
Once the growing season gets started, the biweekly SAP analysis with @advancingecoag will help guide the foliar and fertigation applications to fine tune the nutritional requirements of the trees.

Don’t Stop Picking 🍎
.
Today was a beautiful day to be out and about picking Winecrisp and Ambrosia apples! After a little more than a week of patience we finally have some other varieties ready to be picked! Timing for picking between varieties can be tricky. They don’t always line up cleanly.
