When news started to spread that @humbandofficial was reuniting after a 7 year hiatus, I instantly olaced a call to my best friend in Kansas City @robertsjbayer_esquire and the trip out west was confirmed immediately. This weekend was epic. In just two days we went to Sanamluang, Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffle, El Coyote, Amoeba Records, The Dresden, The Drawing Room and of course The Palladium. It is funny what a bad rap that place gets as I have seen just about every band I have ever cared about there for over 30 years. @slideawayfest is quickly making its mark as THE shoegaze festival to attend and this year was no different. Nicky from the band @bandofnothing helps organize and he and the other organizers have done pitting together a blend of up and coming , current, and legendary acts within the scene. Getting to see Ovlov, Chapterhouse, Nothing, and Hum on two consecutive nights was a dream that won’t be replicated soon. Even though Nothing are the core band of the festival and formidable in their own right - I love that they don’t feel the need to headline when the situation calls for it. The music was incredible. Ovlov was exciting, Chapterhouse dreamy, Nothing bombastic, and. Hum were mighty. As great ad the music was I loved attending with Bobby, Noelle, Lily and hanging out with my friend of three decades.. Sarah. There were so many laughs and cool musical moments. I loved all of the 20 somethings that knew the lyrics of every song. The kids are all right. It was uplifting. Clear eyes, full hearts…can’t lose. by @sauldog

@kilbyblockparty has consistently held a stranglehold on best music festival lineup the last few years and yesterday was no exception. @thugxwaffle and I got there early to catch @diespitz incendiary 40 minute set. With a large audience, crowd surfing, and people singing along to every song it was clear that 2pm was much too early to put them on. You’re going to see them creep up the festival posters into larger and larger fonts in the coming years and deservedly so. We also saw KC legend @kevinmorby Towards the end of the night we saw who were there to see. @modestmouse on the precipice of releasing what may very well be the album of the year played a bombastic headlining set, expertly weaving new songs in with classics and deep cuts and the crowd loved all of it and so did I. It’s going ti be a good year for them. Having snow capped peaks in the background only enhanced the setting. We saw Turnstile briefly and they of course brought it. We spent the rest of the night hanging and drinking and laughing with our friends. We are so lucky and grateful. What a whirlwind. by @sauldog

Tonight Ingot to meet the best relief pitcher in baseball. The Reaper himself: Mason Miller. He came straight from saving tonight’s game to the shop and received quite the ovation. He was super kind and laughed when I told him that I thought I was going to be talker than him and basically nicely told me not to worry about it ha ha. He was very kind. I spent part of the last two weeks testing out paint markers that I thought would look good on his rare low numbered rookie cards and thankfully I chose wisely - they turned out pretty great as did the inscribed jersey and game used city connect ball. @honeyholecollect put on another stellar event and @lgcsportsmarketing is creating quite roster with very cool events. It was a cool night. by @sauldog

The best thing for me about Coachella anymore is that bands playing it will often do their own shows in the southwest in the week between the two weekends of the festival. 2 years I got to see Blur play the smallest concert in years and last night I returned to the Fox Theater to see Wet Leg. I’ve been a day one fan of theirs and have enjoyed watching their career take off. Even though this was a smaller show for them, it was the largest stage I had seen them on for a headline show and they were confident with a thunderous sound. The whole band rocks and the Grammys, accolades, and other bits of attention seem to not have fazed them. Long gone are the days they’ve had to fight off the misguided, often misogynistic takes of being industry plants - they did it with writing an even getter album than their first one somehow. The set was just over an hour - 8 songs off their debut and 10 songs off of Moisturizer. It was an epic evening. Thanks to @peytonmarek for being really funny and for attending with me. by @sauldog

Currently on the Amtrak heading back to San Diego after a whirlwind trip to Los Angeles that started less than 36 hours ago. I came into town to see the @gorillaz incredible @houseofkong exhibit - it was unlike any exhibition I have ever been too. I wasn’t allowed to take photos during the coolest parts of it which is most assuredly for the best. I brought my longtime friend of 25 years. He still lives on the same street I did all those years ago so every time I go to my old neighborhood in Los Feliz, a wave of nostalgia always hits. It was extra powerful this time, however, as I also had dinner with and attended the 40th birthday of another longtime friend and a major part of my old career back in the day. He rented out the Los Feliz 3 theater to show a movie called Swingers - one of my all time favorites - that movie offered a third helping of nostalgia - as I almost literally lived the life of the characters , in the exact same locations, and at about the same time as the movie. What really hit me is how significant and real that time in my life was and how proud I am of my friends and to see where their life has taken them and where life has taken me. Nostalgia , while wistfully comforting, is only healthy when you are content with the present. It was a perfect mixture of past and current times as I met a lot of new and wonderful people as well. As I hurtle back at however many miles per hour in a giant metal tube towards my home,I am reminded that I’m always in motion looking forward to the next adventure with gratitude for all I have already done. What a weekend. My heart is full. by @sauldog

Last night I was incredibly lucky to see @gorillaz at the Hollywood Palladium. I had seen them once before on their first tour at this exact same venue 24 years ago. They are now a stadium level band so to see them at a venue that, in comparison, is quite intimate was something I will forever be grateful for. I had been seeing Damon Albarn perform in different interactions for almost a third of a century. He has never stopped creating and I can think of few who have had mega success being the driving creative force between two mega acts. Sure Dave Grohl was in Nirvana but he didn’t have any input. He has collaborated with everyone from Robert Smith to Bad Bunny with astonishing results every time. There were so many special guests on stage as they performed the new album, The Mountain, in its entirety before playing an encore of classics. It’s going to be a contender for album of the year. Damon really enjoyed and was humbled by all of the guests showing up and performing his material - I think at this point he gets more joy watching others shine and being a composer than he he enjoys performing himself. The visuals - being a direct component of the band - were of course stunning and the merch on point. Thanks to @peytonmarek for being awesome and getting the tickets and to my long time friend @jeffpartain for seeing concerts with me for 3 decades and for taking the photo of the marquee since I forgot. Having our friend Cole there was amazing as well. It was great crew and a great night. I look forward to seeing some of their larger shows later this year. by @sauldog

The last time I saw a concert it was Radiohead in Berlin in December. I can’t remember the last time I went almost two months between shows. All I can say is tonight’s show was worth the wait and welcome return to attending live music for me. London via Brixton’s @shame blew the roof off of The Casbah tonight, ripping through a career spanning set and taking no prisoners. The crowd was enthusiastic and enthralled the whole time. The show is not let up and I loved every single song. @sophsesque were a welcome surprise opener. The six piece Los Angeles band is quickly making a name for itself with its debut album coming out on Rough Trade in a month and headline and festival shows lined up for Europe this summer. I wouldn’t be surprised if big things happen for them. They have catch melodies - almost like if the Strokes’ melodies had more energy and less Valium. Going with Rebecca and Glenn made the night all the more memorable so thanks to them as well. I had The Sophs sign their two 7 inch records and got two signed albums from Shame as well half of the singer’s setlist. Epic evening. Last but not least I wanted to show some love to The Casbah itself. It’s been around since 1989 and is the coolest venue anywhere - certainly my favorite. . Los Angeles - where I lived for 15 years - has some iconic venues but nothing this cool - Raji’s, Al’s Bar, and Soaceland all closed down years ago and The Casbah remains. I’m lucky to get to see shows there. by @sauldog

The first thing @_jacksonmerrill_ said to me after we introduced ourselves was ‘That’s a sick Deftones sweatshirt’. I already knew he was cool and the future of the @padres but he also apparently has fantastic taste in music. He was very generous with his time with everyone at tonight’s event. Very funny and kind. I got some cool things signed. Cheers to @honeyholecollect for putting on such a great and unique event. Everybody got a box of cards and if you pulled one of Jackson’s he signed it. This was the first event of its kind and the crew at Honey Hole did a really great job - even figuring out how to make things even better on the fly- everybody felt valued and like they got a great experience. I would go to more for sure. by @sauldog
