6 months ago my dad went to heaven. I always told myself I wouldn’t make a sappy post bc truth was when it happened, I couldn’t. But grief has changed my heart and Ik he would want me to share in case it could help someone.

Behind a man that struggled was a dad that could talk about me and my sibling for days, write poems, teach me how to drive, watch marvel movies with, teach me how to cook, spoil me, make me laugh, tell me about all the places he visited for work, show me the planes he helped build, go on a random weekend adventure, and play guitar hero with.

Grief is weird and for the past 6 months while life moved on, my heart did not. And because grief is loud and very patient there will always be the feeling of loss, but as time goes by I’ve learned a few things! I’ve learned that grief is such a gift, only possible through love, so I hope I never stop grieving. I’ve learned that I’m so lucky to miss a person, despite how hard our relationship was. I’ve also learned that I don’t care much about how hard our relationship was, more so about the good things. I now cry a little more when loss is talked about, relate to a few more people, & comfort a lot more friends. Instead of looking for reasons to not talk about my dad I now look for every possible opportunity to. Grief changing my heart will forever be my biggest blessing. And while loss is often heavier than anything I thought I could handle and something I had never really experienced I am so incredibly blessed to feel so deeply. I am so lucky to have feelings that I don’t understand yet. I will forever miss having him for not only the special parts of life but even the dullest moments and wish he could’ve enjoyed life the same way I do (he’ll be there in his own way). While I would never choose this path for anyone, I am beyond blessed to know he is at peace now.

If you’re struggling with grief of any kind I pinky promise you are not alone, your heart will not always feel so heavy, it is never a burden to feel so deeply, and it’s a great thing to have a big heart!
