This is one of the first poems I wrote at the beginning of last year. I rewrote and reworked it so many times, playing with how it should be, but this is how it felt most true. One big, ugly, terribly structured run-on sentence.

Enjoy!! by @savannashermanwrites

Some recent pubs 🫶🏼

I’ve been posting less poetry lately as I’m really working on honing fiction and making progress on my novel, POLLY, but today I couldn’t help but write a line or two of verse after getting home from work and watching the rain hit my window. Maybe I’ll share some soon, but thank you to everyone who has stayed with me through my writing phases!

I love you all 🫶🏼🌝 by @savannashermanwrites

Not to brag, but… I just read the beloved Russian novel “The Master And Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov for the first time.

I really enjoyed this book, though I must admit I was totally unprepared for the level of ridiculousness in this novel. But it was this same silliness that carried me through. Utterly unnerving, laughable, ironic, and moving, this novel is written with such excellent prose I couldn’t help but dive in with my highlighter and sticky notes.

If you’ve read this book, what did you think??

Saw an author interview recently (won’t name names) where she said books on craft are a waste of time. “You don’t need to know the three-act structure to write a novel. You don’t need a formula. You just need to sit down and write!” *paraphrased, of course.

If she was trying to encourage writers not to overthink it, I can accept that. But if she was trying to gatekeep education on the art of writing, that’s another story.

No one bashes artists for attending art school to improve their craft of sculpting, painting, drawing, etc. No one discourages musicians to go to Juilliard and receive top-notch music training. Why should writing be any different?

That’s why I made this post. I don’t like gatekeeping.

There’s something to be said about our inability to sit with something that isn’t quite good yet. You write something and it’s bad. Perhaps you even know it will be bad beforehand, which makes it harder to sit down and write it in the first place. This resistance of our psyches to allow ourselves to suck.

But you can’t work with a blank slate. You need a slab of clay. You need words on the page. You need bad writing to make good writing.

Biggest mistakes I made when writing my first novel in 2022! 🍎

I honestly felt so defeated for a while and my writing mentor asked me something in 2025 when I said I didn’t know if I had another round in me: “Is it better to be a failed writer or a writer who never tried in the first place?”

I knew then what a privilege it would be to be a failed writer! To have tried! After all, isn’t the point of it all to enjoy it? To have fun? We’re going to be dust one day! If you feel the pull to something you might as well lean in. And that helped me not take the failure so seriously.

Like anything worth the energy, writing will sometimes feel difficult. Strength training isn’t easy; your muscles breaking against one another before they can rebuild. In the same way, writing can feel like heaving a stone up a hill, but always worth it.

BUT JUST BECAUSE ITS HARD DOESNT MEAN IT SHOULDNT BE FUN!!!!! Okay????? Did you hear that????

Learn from my mistakes! And enjoy my apple hat I knitted during a writing break 🧶
