Check out this beauty that we found diving in Komodo National Park, Indonesia 🇮🇩! Colorful critter! Oyster or clam?

Thorny oyster (family Spondylidae)

This rather large clam with spikes is sometimes seen near reefs, stuck to rocks or dead corals. It is not a true oyster, which belong to Family Ostreidae.

They’re 8-10cm. The two-part shell is thick and heavy. The lower (right) valve is cemented very firmly to the hard surface and is more convex (like a cup). The upper (left) valve is rather flat, like a lid, and covered with flat short spines. The animal has short tentacles and eyes at the margin of the body mantle.

Like most other bivalves, it is a filter feeder. When submerged, it opens its valves slightly and sucks in a current of water. It uses its enlarged gills to sieve food particles out of this current. When the tide goes out, it clamps up the valves tightly to prevent water loss.

Collected for food and the shell trade by coastal dwellers. Their shells may also be used in shellcraft or to make lime.

Meet the Red Lipped Batfish!

The true red-lipped batfish (Ogcocephalus darwini) lives exclusively in the Pacific Ocean around the Galápagos Islands and Peru, but the Caribbean is home to its close relative, the shortnose batfish (Ogcocephalus nasutus), which can also feature striking reddish or pinkish lips.

They are poor swimmers and lack a standard swim bladder. Instead, they use their modified pectoral and pelvic fins as little legs to trudge along sandy or muddy bottoms.

Like deep-sea anglerfish, they have a small, retractable appendage on their head (called an illicium) that hides above the mouth and acts as a lure to draw in small fish, crabs, and worms.

They have a flat, triangular body covered in bumpy skin that camouflages them like a piece of coral rubble or a sponge. Their lips range from brownish to bright reddish-pink.

They live in shallow sandy flats down to deep channels (0 to over 1,000 feet) across the Caribbean Sea, though they are exceptionally rare to spot during regular scuba dives. Incredible!

Scalloped hammerhead sharks are moderately large sharks with a global distribution. The most distinguishing characteristic of this shark is its “hammer-shaped” head. They are threatened by commercial fishing, mainly for the shark fin trade. Two distinct population segments of the scalloped hammerhead shark are listed as endangered and two are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The scalloped hammerhead shark can be found in coastal warm temperate and tropical seas worldwide. In the western Atlantic Ocean, the scalloped hammerhead range extends from the northeast coast of the United States (from New Jersey to Florida) to Brazil, including the Gulf of America (formerly Gulf of Mexico) and the Caribbean Sea. In the eastern Atlantic, it can be found from the Mediterranean to Namibia. Populations in the Indian Ocean are found in the following locations: South Africa and the Red Sea to Pakistan, India, and Myanmar, and in the western Pacific, the scalloped hammerhead can be found from Japan and China to New Caledonia, including throughout the Philippines, Indonesia, off Australia. Distribution in the eastern Pacific Ocean extends from the coast of southern California (U.S.), including the Gulf of California, to Ecuador and possibly Peru, and off waters of Hawaii (U.S.) and Tahiti.

Check out these adorable juvenile cuttlefish! If you look closely, there’s a smaller one in the back. We’re so happy we looked closer at older footage of diving in Komodo National Park. It was an endless treasure hunt! No color corrections or enhancements needed, just raw footage!
