The resplendent quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) is a strikingly beautiful, Pigeon size bird. The emerald green against the black, white and bright red makes it strikingly attractive.
For 2 hours the bird was hiding in the thick foliage of the wild avocado trees on which they feed. There was a crowd of about 70 gathered to try and get a view. 60 of them were tourists who were gathered in a bunch talking loudly, close to the tree scaring the bird away. Finally a majority of them got fed-up and left. Then the few serious birders got the opportunity. The first full view was breath taking.
It is found in Central America and southern Mexico, in tropical forests, particularly montane cloud forests. They are part of the Trogon family.
Always remember that when a perched bird poops, it is a sign that it is about to fly off which gives the opportunity for a dramatic shot.

For a couple years, ALL my photos from our 2023 Costa Rica trip were inaccessible. Locked in an external hard drive that just wasn’t letting me in. Sure, there were tens of thousands of OTHER pics on that drive as well, but the Costa Rica photos NEEDED to be recovered.

Well, that has recently changed. Suddenly I’m faced with around 15,000 photos that I never REALLY scrutinized…

Back then, I was more focused on shooting video, but there are a LOT of photos in here that I’ve never shared. Species that I never even knew I’d captured…you gotta realize that it’s pretty overwhelming to be in a place like this.

Candidly, I LOVE being in a position now where I can decide FROM WHERE OR WHEN I feel like posting content.

It could be from today’s sessions in San Francisco, or last month in Denver, or just before that from Brazil…Panama…New York in May…

I don’t think I’ll ever get “caught up” with my backlog of content…at least not on Instagram.

But I love being able to step back in time and share a beautiful gem like this Stripe-tailed Hummingbird…

As someone who wasn’t a photographer before all this, I’m finding it to be a highly rewarding fringe benefit…

It’s like I have a time machine.

I look at these pics and remember the unforgettable day that Steph and I spent with Marino Chacon, birding on his family’s property in the cloud forest of Savegre.

And now…finally, I can show you some of those moments.

Hope you don’t mind that I jump around a little bit…

Pocos conocen este bosque encantado que encontrás si hacés el sendero completo.
Para recorrer la red de senderos no es necesario que te hospedés con nosotros. Nuestro pase del día cuesta sólo $12 y no necesita reservación.

Ya sentimos la nostalgia.
