Especially in small busy branches like Minet it’s wondrous and kind of unbelievable what understaffed excellent (and I’m sure very tired!) staff can achieve. WAHEY! thank you @greenpartynat for listening to all you lot and stopping the dastardly consultants! flabbergasted that the mysterious Libraries Review had the gaul to try and cut £500k from our much loved service. Still unclear whether the bizarre £1m cut/income target has evaporated (clarification would be great!) but surely this shows the political will that it would be ridiculous to pin it back on libraries (all political parties now saying they are anti library cuts). We still need to save the professional leadership too so this Wednesday’s protest will be a WE LOVE LAMBETH LIBRARIES CELEBRATION! Though we are still waiting on a few answers. Transformation and efficiency are Councilspeak for cuts! Thanks to News From Crystal Palace for digging this quote out of the Finance report going to Lambeth Council cabinet next week. If @lambethgreenparty are serious about stopping the Lambeth Library Cuts they must object to this paperwork being approved and not vote it through Cabinet. Current press statements to promise to oppose cuts are undermined when official paperwork says otherwise. Incredibly insulting to our incredible librarians to suggest they are not already community focused and modern when they are often recognised as one of the most progressive and inclusive library services in the UK. by @savelambethlibraries

One of the worst cuts risks is that the Libraries’ professional head of service job has been deleted and we will lose one of our moved loved, award winning members of staff in a matter of weeks. We urgently need politicians to intervene in this error from the Council, as this move will drastically become an issue of a service falling apart, not only is it a loss of a great individual but also a dedicated post to professionally steer the library service. We are nearly at 400 signatures to our open letter to Libraries Cabinet member Cllr Natalie Kane and service Director Dipti Patel. Join us to ask @lambethgreenparty for:
· A solution to the £1m cut mess. The £1m “income target” partly met by venue hire has left libraries with one of the lowest library budgets in London. The book budget was destroyed by Labour, buildings are falling into disrepair and during the heatwave there was no money to keep libraries cool. The £1m cut is wrecking the service and the Greens must find a solution or the senior officers and their consultants will go for more cuts like the below
· No library closures - defend the ten libraries across Lambeth, including Waterloo Library (now in a temporary location and at risk of permanent closure under the current funding cut).
· No reduction in opening hours - Officers have continued to say “nothing is off the table” in terms of cuts.
· No job losses - any reduction in opening hours would make staff redundant. A current restructure has already suggested the complete removal of the librarian head of service post. It is essential that the head of service remains a qualified librarian. The proposed new post-holder would have to manage both libraries and leisure centres! No one person would have the skills and knowledge needed to run both services effectively. It is not just a HR matter, it is a quality of service matter, so we believe it is a political decision @lambethgreenparty must act on.
· No more consultants! It is shocking that after last year’s failed library restructure another £250,000 of public money has been spent by consultants paying an external private company contractor to write yet another restructure. The main output imposing austerity and removing hard working essential public sector workers from the frontline of our services. taken in Lambeth Town Hall by @savelambethlibraries
