Be a part of the change and let’s make waves together. 🌊

This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to join us in protecting our oceans, empowering our youth, and creating a brighter future for our planet.

Saving the Seas is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to bringing ocean education to children, inspiring conservation through creativity, and removing pollution from nature.

This year, we accomplished incredible milestones, from launching our “Mermaid Elle: Saving the Seas” chapter book to hosting our first community beach cleanup on World Ocean Day.

We’ve donated hundreds of books to schools and libraries across the globe, created free educational programs through our Ocean Literacy Program, and equipped families with Beach Cleanup Kits so they can take action in their own communities.

But we cannot do this alone.

Your donation, no matter the size, directly supports:
– Youth ocean-literacy programs
– Free lesson plans and conservation resources for teachers
– Beach cleanup supplies for volunteers
– Global book donations to classrooms and libraries
– Creative campaigns that teach kids how to protect the ocean they will inherit

This Giving Tuesday, help us continue this mission. Help us inspire the next generation of Ocean Heroes. 🔱

Support the cause and be part of meaningful, lasting change. Every dollar creates ripples. Learn more at savingtheseas.org by @savingtheseasorg

We removed 27 pounds of trash and microplastics this #WorldOceansDay but the work is far from over. It is just scratching the surface…

(Thank you to our amazing volunteers at @savingtheseasorg for making it so special!)

It would take millions of efforts to clean up the plastic already in our oceans. Over 5 trillion pieces of plastic, weighing an estimated over 250,000 tons, are still out there, floating, sinking, fragmenting, harming our marine life and polluting ecosystems.

Plastic that ended up there by human hands. So it’s up to humans to remove it.

Across the globe, people are rising up to demand action, calling on governments to protect our oceans, stop deep sea mining, and create real solutions to plastic pollution.

There’s so much work to do. But on this day, we celebrated our 27 pounds. Because doing what we can is the best we can do! And EVERY 👏🏽EFFORT 👏🏽 COUNTS.👏🏽

Our youth deserve to inherit a healthier planet. They are the voice of reason and hope. If we teach them now, they’ll carry this legacy forward.

That’s why I do what I do, deeply, with all my heart.
For the oceans. And it’s always been. Follow @savingtheseasorg to learn more on how you can join our ocean conservation efforts!

NATIV SPACE Florida is now a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat.🌳

To earn the certification, a property has to provide what wildlife needs to live: food, water, cover, places to raise young, and sustainable practices that protect the soil and water.

Ours does this with native plants, mature live oaks, a food forest, and a vegetable garden and by removing invasive species. Birds, butterflies, and pollinators are regular visitors.

Wildlife habitats store carbon, recharge groundwater, reduce flooding and erosion, support pollinators and natural pest control, cut water and chemical use, and connect green spaces for migrating wildlife. Together these benefits keep sediment, fertilizer, and pollutants out of waterways and reduce carbon dioxide in the air, which protects the rivers, coastal waters, and ocean downstream. You can start at home and certify your own yard through @nationalwildlife

NATIV SPACE is the flagship chapter of Roots to Reefs, the Saving the Seas land conservation program. Come to a garden day here in Clermont, take a tour, or contact us at the link in bio to help you start a NATIV SPACE in your own community.

Happy Halloween, fishies! 👻

I got to swim by @colonialtownpark for their Halloween event with my “Mermaid Elle: Saving the Seas” chapter books, @finfunmermaid kids tails and merch! So many kiddos were happy with their signed books and mermaid tails, all supporting conservation @savingtheseasorg

How do you like my spooky vibes this time for my set up?

Our message is simple, and here in Clermont, we’re putting it into practice in our own community.

🌱 Eat plants

We teach our community how food choices affect our planet. We offer events, courses and workshops in whole food plant-based nutrition for individuals, schools, and community organizations. We’re also working with local businesses, schools, and institutions to add more plant-based options to their menus, and calling on local governments to do the same. In partnership with @mervanawellness and Eat for The Planet program at @savingtheseasorg

🌳 Plant trees

NATIV SPACE, @nativspacefl the Roots to Reefs land conservation chapter of @savingtheseasorg in Clermont, is a certified wildlife habitat with a vegetable garden, a food forest, and native and edible plants serving as an example for the community. It shows how healthy land protects the water that flows to our oceans, and it grows produce for our farm-to-table community events.

Our first fundraiser dinner is this weekend presented by @vegansinclermont , with proceeds supporting Eat for the Planet @savingtheseasorg and seeking endorsements for @plantbasedtreaty

Want to get involved, volunteer, or bring plant-based options to your business or school? Send us a message.

Our reefs need your attention. 🚨🪸

Coral reefs support about a third of all marine species, protect our coastlines from storms, and feed millions of people.

Here’s where they stand today:

• The fourth global coral bleaching event (2023 to 2025) hit 84% of the world’s reefs, the largest on record.

• In 2023, Florida’s water reached up to 93°F, causing 100% coral bleaching on Florida’s Coral Reef.

• Elkhorn and staghorn corals suffered up to 100% mortality, leaving them functionally extinct on the reef.

• Florida’s Reef Tract has lost more than 90% of its healthy coral cover in 40 years. Restoration groups now have more corals in their nurseries than on the reef.

How you can help protect our reefs:

• Educate the youth. Teaching kids about the ocean has been Saving the Seas’ first mission from day one. Through our Ocean Literacy Program lesson plans and the book Mermaid Elle: Saving the Seas, children learn why reefs matter at home and in schools. Dive into our mermaid ambassador’s world Mermaid Elle @themermaidelle with the young ocean lovers in your life and help raise the next generation of reef protectors.

• Eat plant-based. Animal agriculture drives the emissions warming our oceans, and farm runoff feeds algae that smother corals. Endorse the @plantbasedtreaty

• Stop supporting the fishing industry. Overfishing wipes out massive numbers of fish, and drives biodiversity loss that impacts our reefs.

• Wear mineral, reef-safe sunscreen and participate in beach clean-ups.

• Use mooring buoys instead of anchors, and never touch or stand on coral.

• Support coral restoration groups working to replant Florida’s reefs.

We can heal our oceans together!

What you eat, matters! 🌎 Introducing Eat for the Planet, a new education program from Saving the Seas.

At Saving the Seas, we believe choosing a plant-based lifestyle is one of the most effective solutions for protecting our oceans, land and climate.

Here’s why:

• A global shift to diets without animal products could cut farmland use by more than 75%, while still feeding the world.

• Animal-based foods, including livestock feed, produce 57% of food production emissions, compared with 29% for plant-based foods.

• Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation. Agricultural expansion drives almost 90% of global deforestation.

• Feed fertilizer and manure from farms wash into rivers and reach the coast, draining oxygen from the water. The Gulf of Mexico dead zone averages more than 4,700 square miles.

• Fishing nets kill around 300,000 whales, dolphins, and porpoises every year as bycatch. About 250,000 endangered sea turtles drown on fishing lines each year. Choosing plants over seafood means no more nets in the water.

• Roughly 100 million sharks and rays are caught and thrown away each year in fisheries targeting other seafood.

• Fishing has had the largest impact on ocean biodiversity of any human activity over the past 50 years, and industrial fishing now covers more than half of the ocean’s surface. Every plant-based meal eases the pressure on marine species and gives ocean ecosystems room to recover.

Eat for the Planet connects dietary choices to public health and environmental sustainability. We will be facilitating events, courses and workshops in plant-based nutrition for individuals, schools, and community organizations, starting with our local efforts @pbtclermont

In partnership with @plantbasedtreaty , we also call on local governments to implement plant-based options and endorse the treaty.

Saving the Seas is proud to partner with iEARN Latina on this semester’s Periodistas por el Planeta project, bringing our Ocean Literacy Program into science and language arts curriculum at schools across Latin America.

Students are learning about the real effects of plastic pollution and what it means to be an ocean steward.

Pictured here are students at Colegio Rosa-Bell in Guayabo, Puerto Rico, asking hard questions, researching solutions, and reporting on what they find, with educational resources we provide such as the Mermaid Elle: Saving the Seas chapter book, lesson plans, beach clean up kits, educational videos, and advising during the program.

That’s how the next generation of ocean advocates gets built. If you’re a school or an educator and would like your students to participate in our upcoming Ocean Literacy Program projects e-mail us at info@savingtheseas.org

Dead zones are areas of the ocean with so little oxygen that fish and other marine life can’t survive there. A major cause is runoff from animal agriculture: manure and the fertilizer used to grow animal feed wash from farmland into rivers and out to sea. The extra nutrients feed huge algae blooms, and when the algae die and decompose, they use up the oxygen in the water.

The Gulf of Mexico has one of the largest dead zones in the world, fed by farm runoff carried down the Mississippi River. Here in Florida, nutrient pollution also fuels the algae blooms and red tides that hit our lakes, rivers, and coasts.

Choosing plants takes pressure off our waterways and gives marine life a chance to recover. Here in Clermont, we’re working with @savingtheseasorg through the Eat for the Planet program to bring more plant-based options to local businesses, schools, and institutions.

Trash was low in September partly because they had an official big cleanup before Waterfest and partly because we didn’t go as much as usual. All trash was collected off of Englewood beach using my Oceans Hero’s kit from @savingtheseasorg
