It’s officially wolf hunting season in Wyoming, but what does that mean for wolves in the Northern Rockies? 🚨

For many wolves, the cards are stacked against them. Legally speaking, wolf packs — including Mollie’s pack — are protected from hunting while inside of the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park. But the moment a wolf pack leaves the Park’s invisible boundaries and steps into the established “Trophy Hunting Zone” they’re at risk of losing their lives to trophy hunting.

That’s why we’re fighting on the ground next week in Evanston, Wyoming, in front of the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission to protect this historically and scientifically significant pack.

We have good news about Mollie’s pack: None of the four wolves killed in Wyoming’s now-closed wolf hunting areas 1 and 2 were members of this extraordinary Yellowstone family.

But the threat isn’t over. Today we were on the ground in Evanston, Wyoming, fighting for the future of Mollie’s pack before the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission, as the state’s wolf hunting season continues.

While we’re relieved Mollie’s pack is safe, four other wolves still lost their lives in these hunting zones this year. At least six additional wolves in Wyoming have also been killed by trophy hunters this past week.

Our fight is far from over. Wolves should not be killed simply for roaming beyond Yellowstone’s invisible borders, and Mollie’s pack could face this same threat next year if nothing changes.

With thousands of supporters behind our efforts, we’ll continue urging Wyoming officials to protect these wolves wherever they roam, inside Yellowstone or beyond its boundaries.

🚨 BREAKING: Four wolves have been killed in Wyoming’s Hunt Areas 1 and 2, the region where Yellowstone’s Mollie’s pack has been sighted this year.

The hunt zones are now closed, and we will not be able to confirm which wolves were killed — or if they were from the pack — until Wyoming releases its report in the spring.

More than 113,000 messages called for protection for Mollie’s pack, Yellowstone’s longest continuously established wolf family.

We are bringing those voices with us to the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission meeting this week. We were originally planning to urge officials to close the hunting areas where Mollie’s pack would’ve been at risk.

These four wolves were killed in less than a week since the wolf hunting season opened on Sept. 15.

Mollie’s pack is led by 12-year-old matriarch 1090F, the park’s oldest living wolf. For decades, these wolves have contributed to science and inspired people from around the world.

But wolves can’t see the invisible line where Yellowstone National Park ends. These animals deserve to be protected across the full range of their habitat, not just when they happen to be inside the park.

We’re also in court to restore federal protections to Northern Rockies wolves and working to defend wolf protections across the lower 48. We’ve fought for wolves for decades, and we won’t stop now.

In this series, wolf watchers, guides and filmmakers share what wolves mean to them, from the lessons they’ve learned observing them to the communities that have formed around them.

For many, wolves are more than a species. They represent wildness, resilience and the possibility of coexistence. Their return to places like Yellowstone has reshaped ecosystems and inspired generations of people to care more deeply about the natural world.

Together, we’ve sent nearly 113,000 messages calling on Wyoming wildlife officials to protect this extraordinary Yellowstone wolf family from the state’s wolf hunting season. THANK YOU to everyone who joined us, stood up for wolves, and responded.

But the threat isn’t over.

Wolf hunting season is now underway in Wyoming. Mollie’s pack doesn’t know where Yellowstone National Park ends, and crossing an invisible boundary could put these wolves at risk of being killed.

That’s why we’re urging the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission to protect Mollie’s pack from wolf hunting. And next week, we’re taking your messages with us.

Wolf hunting season begins today in Wyoming, and wolves like Yellowstone’s Mollie’s pack could pay the price for crossing an invisible line. 
As another hunting season in Wyoming gets underway, we asked our Senior Carnivore Campaigner Samantha Miller to break down the threats to Mollie’s Pack and other wolves around Yellowstone.  Next week we’ll be at the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission meeting advocating for Mollie’s pack, Yellowstone’s longest continuously established wolf family, and urging officials to close the area where the pack has been seen this year to wolf hunting.  The time to protect Mollie’s pack is now.

GOOD NEWS! California is standing firm in the face of the Trump administration’s latest attack on gray wolves.

On September 4, President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14425, directing the U.S. Department of the Interior to determine within 90 days whether gray wolves and critically endangered Mexican gray wolves meet federal criteria for delisting or downlisting under the Endangered Species Act.

In a September 10 statement responding directly to the executive order, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reaffirmed that the state “remains committed to both endangered species recovery under state and federal law” and said California will continue relying on sound science and meaningful public participation when making wildlife-management decisions.

Gray wolves are independently listed as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act, meaning their protections do not simply disappear if the Trump administration removes federal safeguards. Gray wolves have been protected under California law since 2014, and it remains illegal to hunt, pursue, capture or kill a wolf in the state without lawful authorization. California has no wolf hunting season.

Wolves returned to California naturally. They were not reintroduced by the state. After being eliminated from California nearly a century ago, dispersing wolves began recolonizing their historic range on their own, and the state now supports multiple established packs.

With their return, California has increasingly focused on coexistence rather than persecution, using tools such as range riders, fladry and other nonlethal deterrents to reduce conflicts between wolves and livestock producers; bolstered by the expected passage of SB 1135, the California Wildlife Coexistence Act.

URGENT: One of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem's oldest living wolves, 1090F, is in imminent danger.

The beloved, majestic matriarch of Mollie's pack has a target on her back.

But it's not too late to help.

After 1090F spent nearly her entire life inside Yellowstone National Park, recently she and her pack established a den outside the park's protective boundary, though still in Wyoming.

Having unknowingly drifted from Yellowstone's protective boundaries, these wolves could be legally killed when Wyoming's hunting season opens Sept. 15.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission can — and must — protect 1090F and her extraordinary family.

⚠️ In case you missed it — last week Trump announced an executive order pushing to remove endangered species protection for gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves. This move opens the possibility of erasing decades of work to give wolves a future.

But we won’t stand for it.

There are only a reported 317 Mexican gray wolves left in the wild. Gray wolves have made some gains in parts of their historical range, but many populations are still trying to recover.

These wolves have the right to live free in the wild and deserve federal protection. It’s up to us to stand up for them.

⚠️ This is a life-threatening moment for wolves.

Trump issued an executive order last week that directs federal agencies to consider stripping protections from gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves. The order also calls for changes that could make it easier to kill wolves, including trapping and aerial gunning.

But wolves are STILL protected. Today, the Endangered Species Act protects Mexican gray wolves in Arizona and New Mexico, and other gray wolves remain federally protected across most of the lower 48 states. Those protections exist to keep wolves from sliding back toward extinction and give them a chance to recover in the wild.

What happens next could determine their future.

There are just 317 Mexican gray wolves left in the wild in the United States, and gray wolves in the lower 48 states only occupy around 10% of their historic range. They need more protection, not less.

We’ve beaten attempts to strip wolf protections in court before, and we’re ready to do it again.
