LET ME TELL YOU A STORY about the nicest thing another person has ever done for me.
Many of you know I have been a huge fan of the Baby-sitters Club for close to a quarter century now. I even have a tattoo of Kristy on my inner left arm - she's one of the three characters I got tattooed to celebrate the books that inspired me to become a writer. (BSC, Amelia's Notebook, and Junie B Jones.)
And many of you also know that around this time two years ago, I lost Chewie, the dog I was very strongly bonded with, the closest thing I'd ever had to a child.
Summer of 2024 was HARD for me. I was not adjusting well to life without Chewie.
That summer, I was spending a weekend with @beckyalbertalli, who started out as one of my favorite YA authors and became one of my best friends. She knew how difficult Chewie's loss had been impacting me, too.
So, she shared a bit of good news with me - not only was there a NEW BABYSITTERS CLUB BOOK in production, but SHE had been hired to write for it! That was good enough news on its own - but then, she gave me the greatest surprise of my life: she told me she was going to write Chewie into the book.
I was always sad that Chewie didn't get to experience many of the old man years. He had excited puppy energy until he was at least 10 years old, and then got sick with cancer shortly after.
So, elderly Chewie, the sweet old man he always had in him, will live on forever as a dog character in the Babysitters Club, one of my favorite book series of all time. 🥹
The book released this week - you can get it and read it now! It's called BABY-SITTER SUMMER.
Then, last week, Becky surprised me by inviting me out to New York to celebrate the launch with her - and get to meet ALL the authors who worked on this book - that includes Ann M. Martin, original Baby-sitters Club author, ONE OF MY CHILDHOOD HEROES, as well as David Levithan, a queer author I've admired for years.
To say this week has been emotional would be an understatement.

IT'S BOOK LAUNCH DAY!!!
Today, I'm shipping out a bunch of preorders! But, what if you're a Midwest princess yourself, and you want to see me in person at a book signing? Well, here's my current schedule! More dates & events will be added as the summer goes on. My first event will be this Saturday in the Uptown neighborhood or Chicago - see @exploreuptownchi for more details about the Art Walk!
Then, at the start of July, I'll be with my fellow queer authors from the NEW Midwest chapter of @sapphiclitpopup!
Then, join me and my mom (@lolasbaggage) in Wisconsin for the grown up book fair, hosted by @thelangholf - my mom will be selling bookish handmade tote bags, and I'll be signing books, selling some homemade merch, and more!
Then, it's time for one of my favorite events of the year in September - Printers Row Lit Fest, where I'll once again be sharing a tent with my queer author friends at Sapphic Lit Pop-up!

IT'S COMING TOMORROW!!! Happy #Pride Month, everyone! Tomorrow, my new book NOT STRAIGHT finally releases! That means today is the LAST day to snag a preorder bundle - if you'd like to get a copy of the signed book along with my bundle of homemade merch, today is the last day to order! (Link in bio.) Tomorrow, the book is officially available!
So, for our final character feature in our countdown, today we're looking at the main character, Kyra! Kyra is a lot like me - she's got moderate to severe scoliosis, and as a result, she's grappling a lot with what it means to be strong. Is strength physical, or is it in the mind?
Kyra has found her own inner strength through becoming an athlete, but what happens when she injures her back and has to go back to physical therapy for the millionth time, instead of spending the summer training with her friends?
And what if her spine isn't the ONLY THING that's NOT STRAIGHT?
And what if, for Kyra, strength comes from finding the power to accept who she really is, embrace her queerness, and find a community who loves her for who she is?
This is an #ownvoices YA novel about coming out as #queer, taking pride in having a #disability, and more!
I can't wait to share this new book with you all!!!
