It would be easy to treat this as a one-off, a mistake that travelled too far before it was corrected.

The real issue isn’t that the headline was wrong, though; it’s that it felt right.

We have to ask why certain versions of events travel further, faster, and with more conviction than others.

Why is doubt so easily directed at some, and so rarely at others?

Why does legal complexity get flattened into moral certainty, but only in one direction?

That’s the thing about misinformation: it spreads quickly and along familiar lines. by @sayfe.official

ā€œFind her.ā€

That’s what people online are now calling for - the brave woman at the centre of the Tanner Bruhn rape case to be identified and shamed.

But here’s what the media got wrong, despite urgent attention being brought to the inaccuracy by my friend Jacob Gooden:

A prosecution witness lied. Not the complainant.

Yet the story quickly shifted to ā€œfalse rape allegationā€ - like it so often does.

That misrepresentation has now travelled across media outlets nationwide, fuelling online harassment and calls for the complainant to be punished.

Two facts matter here:
1. Withdrawal of charges does not equal a false allegation.
2. The witness who gave false testimony was not the complainant.

Victims go through hell and back for the mere chance to hold a perpetrator accountable - often for the sake of public safety. She has given months, maybe years, of her life cooperating with the state as a witness.

Already isolated and legally unrepresented in a system that was never designed to support her, she has now also been let down by a prosecution that didn’t bother to properly screen a witness who later admitted to lying.

So the trial collapses. The charges are dropped.

It is devastating.

And now, on top of that, she’s being publicly crucified.

Inaccuracy in reporting sexual assault matters isn’t a technicality. It reinforces dangerous rape myths and emboldens perpetrators at a national scale - including the one in question (allegedly).

It is also the public defamation of a very vulnerable person.

So yes, let’s find her.

Let’s find her and tell her we support her in suing the media outlets recklessly endangering her wellbeing.

That should be the priority - not welcoming Tanner Bruhn back onto the footy field. by @sayfe.official

TW: This post discusses sexual assault as a theme: When we went to upload this, Instagram Reels suggested we keep it under three minutes. I understand the intent. In a fast-moving world, it can be hard to hold attention, but sometimes it’s important to tell the whole story, Laura’s story.

@sayfe.official with the support of @polishedman and @ygap are seeking to provide a system-level insight into the shortcomings of current disclosure processes for survivors of sexual assault. Importantly, we are not just asking for change. We have brought the solution to the table as well.
So, if you are a changemaker, we welcome you to get in touch. And if you’re someone who cares about seeing meaningful reform, please consider sharing this so it reaches those who have the ability to shift the landscape.
While this solution is not yet onboarded or publicly available, we stand ready. In the meantime, we don’t want to discourage anyone from seeking support or considering making a report. We strongly encourage accessing resources like @withyouwecan_ who are helping people navigate the current systems safely.
Information about support services across Australian states and territories can be found in the Resources tab on our website. Link in bio. #believesurvivors by @sayfe.official

Anonymous reporting can help victims share what happened without committing to a formal statement - but not every state offers the same options.

Understanding how each state’s system works can help victims stay in control and make choices that feel right for them.

Research is well and truly underway into the potential of alternative reporting as first response tools. These pathways could offer a way for victims to maintain control of their story while protecting the integrity of evidence. by @sayfe.official

TW: This reel discusses sexual assault as a theme.

The team at SAYFE, like so many others, have been deeply concerned by the rise of dangerous misinformation on social media about sexual assault reporting and ā€œfalse reportingā€. So, we asked co-founder Jacob to provide some vital facts, context and balance to this conversation.

For those wanting to learn more, we recommend searching for the Australian Law Reform Commission: Justice Response to Sexual Violence report.

At SAYFE, like the other members of the inaugural cohort of the ā€˜Polished Innovators’ program, we are committed to doing more than acknowledging the realities of this abhorrent crime. We are determined to deliver solutions that drive meaningful change and reshape the landscape.

To learn more about our work, visit our website. If you are a change-maker and would like to be a part of helping shift the needle we would love to hear from you.
