if you’ve come to my one of my classes before, you know I always begin with a yoga philosophy theme and relate it to a personal experience, weaving that theme throughout the practice.

the intention for a monthly theme was there but alas, life be life-ing, so instead I kept it real and true to what I was going through at the time and these “ad-hoc” themes manifested, which worked out so beautifully and hopefully resonated with the wonderful people who come and practice with me.

maybe one of these will resonate with you too 🌝

now looking back through all of them as I write this post, they all integrate with one another and a great reminder to remember what we practice and learn on the mat. taken in Brighton and Hove by @saylesswithella

june dive in wraysbury! I remember doing my first ever open water dive here 4 years ago (with @luke.demarest) and haven’t been back since… baby freediver couldn’t even fin with legs straight, equalise and I remember thinking, wow those three tunnels were long.

so nice to come back to places as a touchpoint for how far you’ve come 🥹

epic to dive with the best people too on the sunniest day… also saw a carp and shitloads of crayfish. taken in Wraysbury Dive Centre by @saylesswithella

I spent last weekend taking part in @simonborgolivier’s 5D synergy flow workshop @spaceyogastudiouk

he mentioned the sutra – Sthira Sukham Asanam – “asana is a steady comfortable posture”, which really resonated with me, as well as the mindset of “breathe less, stretch less, think less”, especially since this is key for freediving and holding your breath underwater.

firm but relaxed, steady but soft, effort with ease.

I don’t think I’ve ever softened my belly and relaxed my lower back so much, but tbh, the mental relaxation and tuning down the “striving” mindset was the most challenging part – to only go deeper into a pose only if it feels relaxed, to not stretch further and chase the sensations, feelings, or otherwise it doesn’t feel like I’ve worked that part of the body.

oh to swing with the pendulum, what a balance.

anyways, say less. by @saylesswithella

📿 om gam ganapataye namaha = I bow to Ganesha
🤲🏽 ganesh mudra = gesture invoking the energy of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles

I love when mantras come into your life exactly when you need them, it’s almost like a sign from the universe that it’s got your back – have faith and keep believing in yourself.

this one I always come back to whenever I have to make hard decisions or facing any fears.

there’s also something so powerful about interlocking the fingers together with strength in the upper body, kind of like you’re making a promise to yourself to keep going and see it through or hanging on with resilience.

are there any mantras that’s resonated with you in a special way?

📿 om namah shivaya = I bow to Shiva
🤲🏽 vajrapradama mudra = gesture of unshakeable confidence

confidence in speaking up and sharing my opinion out loud is something I’ve always struggled with, perhaps because english is not my first language and sometimes, I still get the fear of “forgetting” the word for a specific thing and I’ll get that “stage-fright”.

perhaps it’s also the fear of not knowing the answers to everything or having enough knowledge on a topic.

perhaps if we broke it down simply – it’s the fear of not being good enough and failing.

two years ago, something happened in my life that really knocked my confidence down and slowly, I’ve been rebuilding this – sometimes one step forward, two steps back – but I kept going because the only way is up.

however, despite all the work, the tweaks and pivots, the lessons – the bridge that was missing and preventing me from moving forward acknowledging and believing in myself.

and I couldn’t let that stop me anymore – I had to take the leap and just make that first step, despite how scary it felt, despite the fear of rejection, despite the pain.

because I needed to honour and believe in myself.

and guess what, everyone at some point struggles with confidence – they just have their own definition and they don’t let the doubt get in their way.

shamanic lore explains that the finest treasures of humanity are hidden where people are most afraid to go… where’s yours?

📿 sat nam = truth is my name
🤲🏽 tattva mudra = gesture of truth

mantras are more than just words – they are sacred phrases and sounds that when repeated, help us to concentrate, quiet the mind and connect to a deeper state of awareness and consciousness, even something greater than ourselves.

mudras are more than just positions – they are gestures or seals made by the subtle movements of the body, most commonly hasta mudras with the hands, allowing us to redirect that life force energy within and guide the body, breath and mind to one direction.

for me, sat nam and tattva came at a time when I needed a reminder of who I really was – easy to lose during the whirlwind of life, the stresses and emotions that can flood your essence.

sometimes when I’m pool training for freediving and my awareness is a bit scattered, I come back to sat nam – simple and focused.

both are really useful practices to integrate within your meditation – maybe next time you’re walking, instead of being on your phone, chant ‘sat nam’ quietly in your head or when you’re sat on the bus or train, be steady with tattva mudra.
