If you live in the highlighted area your home could potentially be expropriated for the Alto high speed rail. Many people we’ve talked to in Durham and the GTA hadn’t even heard of the Alto high speed rail.

This updated map provides a record of the overwhelming opposition to either of the original routes proposed by Alto.

Ontario organizations that formally opposed, stated concerns with, or recommended changes to the original proposed routes or number of stops include: 𝟱𝟮 𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗹, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟰𝟵 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆, 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀.

We are week 10 of the Crosby Protest
When: Saturdays
Time: 11am- 1pm
Place: Crosby hwy 15 and 42 at the new roundabout.
Backup will be at the Cataraqui Trail on hwy 15 by the Chaffeys Lock Road.
Why: Because we need to stay diligent and keep everyone aware to what ALTO is, and that it is still very much a real threat to our communities...therefore our weekly protest and awareness campaign remains on.

Bring your signs, bring the sign you have outside on the lawn, or just come as you are, and I have some signs....or if your passing by honk, wave and cheer us on to show us support, and make sure and educate your friends about ALTO.

We are still a small crew, but we have passion and want to bring awareness so others will go out and make their voices heard too. by @saynotoalto

East Hawkesbury residents put up an anti-Alto exhibit showing the scale of the proposed train project. The corridor is estimated to be 60 m wide, and service roads might not even be included in those 60 m. Farmers Forum interviewed Kristin Muller, co-founder of AltNo.ca, and several nearby farmers and residents.

In response to Alto’s communication guy’s letter the day before: Re: “Building high-speed rail responsibly” (July 16)

Alto’s chief communications officer writes of consulting “early,” of “meaningful input,” of working “in partnership with the communities.” Readers of this paper might find that hard to square with what they learned earlier this week: that Kingston has already signed a non-disclosure agreement governing its talks with Alto, concluded not in open council, but by city lawyers under a delegated-authority bylaw, without public debate.

Consider who that leaves exposed. A Kingston alignment was not part of Alto’s formal consultation; the city began lobbying for a station only after the study corridor was announced in January. So the residents most at risk of expropriation and disruption from a route into Kingston are people who had no consultation window when it mattered, and who are now shut out again by an agreement they never saw and cannot read. They were not asked, and now they cannot be told.

The secrecy reaches past the city limits, too. As Rideau Lakes councillor Paula Banks has noted, any corridor serving Kingston must pass through neighbouring municipalities. Those communities took no part in the talks, and the NDA now keeps them from learning what was said.

Boivin’s letter is all adjectives — fairness, respect, a “personalized approach” — and no hard facts about cost, ridership, or the properties an undefined corridor will hold in limbo for years. Expropriation, he assures us, “would be carried out by the appropriate authorities.” Alto drives the need, then hands the act to someone else.

Alto promises to treat property owners “fairly and respectfully.” But there is nothing respectful about deciding their future behind a sealed agreement they are not permitted to read.

“Seems from peoples comments, people not knowing what ALTO is has really been coming to light.
This system is completely fenced off, with no level crossings, here’s some visual examples of just how wide that is.
ALTO isn’t a normal sized rail system, I honestly don’t think many people understand that.
The same few ALTO extremists that support this disaster, seem to not understand just how destructive a 60 metres wide area for a luxury, truly is, so let’s go over some examples of just how wide this preposterous proposal is.
The minimum width of provincial highway lanes is 3.7 metres, now let’s do some math here, 60 m divided by 3.7 m = 16.21 (let’s ignore the .21) that means that ALTO’s right of way is the equivalent of 16 lanes wide of provincial highway, once you add medians and shoulders it would be lowered to roughly 12 - 15 lanes of a fully operational provincial highway, 6 - 8 lanes either side….. this isn’t just a 2 way conventional rail system this is a MASSIVE slice through our provinces the equivalent to most of the 401 or other major 400 highways.

Let’s take some trucks as another example, a standard width of a semi-truck is 2.5 metres average, again some simple math here, 60 m divided by 2.5 m = 24 semi-trucks side by side, that’s larger than most trucking storage yards just slicing through destroying everything in its path.

Getting the picture ?
This isn’t just a small little proposal here, this is a MASSIVE fenced off abomination destroying everything in its path to only serve as a luxury during times when many Canadians are struggling to meet necessities, if these extremists would take a step back and actually learn what this proposal is over taking a political party stance, they would see how destructive it truly is and how this is NOT what we need.
Just because someone voted for liberals doesn’t mean they need to support everything the liberals do or say, many people following here are from every political angle, yet they don’t support this proposal because they can clearly see what’s actually best for our country and not just follow what they are told, that’s what Canada needs more of.”

“I made this post months and months ago, and as we sit here blanketed for days by a cloud of smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec fires, it makes this topic even more relevant.
Tho this year, so far, the fires are further north, it doesn’t neglect how last year and the year before these fires were knocking on people’s doors across hwy 7, this sort of “wall” across the province is a prime concern for rural communities.
Many of the townships along the ALTO proposed route span over a hundred thousand acres plus, where every second counts to reach long distances, delaying emergency services by closing roads and forcing them to add numerous kms to their routing system could make the difference between putting a fire out and a evacuation.

——————

For years and years, Peterborough County and Hastings County have experienced a troubling number of forest fires.
Dry conditions and strong winds already strain emergency responders, adding the proposed ALTO rail line through key corridors would block road access and delay fire trucks, rescue crews and evacuation teams.
In a region where every minute matters, any obstruction to emergency response risks making dangerous wildfire situations even more devastating for families and communities.”
