Counting down and throwing it back. This coming Monday 3/23, 3rd Party (@farbeon @mikalaminmusic & myself) reunite on stage for a special set at The Lift Up at @nublunyc hosted by @babaisrael (🎟️inbio). For thems that know, for thems that don’t, here’s a look back at the crew: some of our stage and tour adventures, album, press and print media photoshoots, circa 2003 - 2011 🙏🏼 It is remarkable to reflect on nearly 25 years of friendship and collaboration, the ups and downs, risks and gifts, growth and feels, travels and travails; to revisit music we wrote 20 years ago; to sense what remains constant and what has shifted. I would not be the human/artist/educator I am today were it not for these brothers, as I am blessed to still call them, and treasure the dreams we shared, community we built and catalog we created. ONE NIGHT ONLY SAY WORD!

We were supposed to have a show in NYC last night, but the blizzard dictated otherwise. The incredible @abillifree is out in BK from the Southwest, and this was going to be our first chance to perform “Like Water” (prod. by @phinestro) live on stage together. We couldn’t let the visit pass without rocking it, and let it flow one time from the home studio. Say Word. 💐🙏🏼❄️

I couldn’t be more honored or excited to debut the FAKE FLOWERS LAST FOREVER VINYL at the homebase of feel good times focused on records, Hip Hop Culture and community: @bierwax✨You’re invited to join for an afternoon session on what looks to be a glorious Spring Saturday🌷From 4-7pm, I’ll be on the decks spinning beautiful music: Jazz, Soul, Hip Hop & homies’ tunes, mixing selections closest to my heart that are in the FFLF creative universe. At 5:00pm and 6:30pm, I will be playing my new album on wax for the very first times, top to bottom. I’ll have the fresh-off-the-press limited edition vinyl for sale, and if you pre-ordered you can come grab your copy in person. Plus a couple other FFLF merch nuggets. Longtime coming it is. 💐📡🌐12/1/24 gather online! I’m back from an amazing European run in support of the new album, on the heels of a beautiful, intimate release ritual in Brooklyn. The reception has been incredible thus far, from listeners, DJs, and live audiences alike. As the momentum keeps building, feedback rolls in and radio chart positions keep ascending, I want to invite my worldwide family to gather for a collective sonic/lyrical experience via a @bandcamp Listening Party. On Sunday, December 1 at 3pm EST we’ll come together, fire up the group chat and press play. I’ll run a simulcast on Zoom so we have the option to be in the same virtual room, and will host a short Q&A/reflections session there after the listening. Also will share some exciting updates on the vinyl pressing, and plans for Winter/Spring U.S. shows. All my love and thanks for the support thus far. 💐Sacred Texts💐

As we countdown to album bloom this Friday, I want to share gems that informed its shape, sound, substance, and give bouquets of gratitude:

📚A bell hooks book for everything, for teaching reference and recalibration. Alongside is Henry Grayson’s transformative “Mindful Loving,” which entered my world right on time like a whole intervention. In uprooting patterns and reprogramming the white supremacist patriarchal capitalist in me, I have also reframed my understanding of conflict, Palestinian freedom and connection to universal liberation.

🔊The sound has the imprint of TheLessonGK all over it. Magic in a bottle, a powerhouse improv machine that changed the way a generation of musicians play, and listen. I love these brothers so deeply, and am grateful to carry the spirit and have vital contributions on the album from them.

🃏Understanding and honoring ancestral legacy, unfinished work, disrupting generational trauma. My Grandmother Sylvia passed far too early, leaving much behind. I was the only grandchild she ever held, and I take that charge, channeled through the totem of this inherited deck of cards.

🐍Communing and communicating with self and spirits is ritual for me, and Kim Krans’ “Wild Unknown” tarot deck is a crucial tool. I carry this deck everywhere as prompt and mirror.

🎶I don’t listen to rap music when writing rap music. I hear my own voice more clearly this way. First time I saw Samora Pinderhughes perform “Process,” tears streamed down my face. In a way similar to when I listen to Gil Scott-Heron’s “I’m New Here.” What these have in common: intention and vulnerability, from men, questing for and living out the divine masculinity I admire so.

🩻My former therapist left me with tools and quotes galore. Lens shifting, embracing people for who they are, considerations of legacy, firming boundaries, and sticky notes around my studio that ring like mantras.

📖In these syllabi my life is synthesized, and my students in turn offer some of life’s greatest lessons. Y’all push me to grow, slow, and know.

👦🏻So much of this work is about healing, honoring and forgiving past versions of myself. To you kid.
