What Makes an Idea Resonate?

During AUSA, Sarah Blake Morgan sat down with me and Alex Morrow of MOPs & MOEs to talk about what we’ve learned about creating content that resonates with people.

Alex spends a lot of time thinking about how to take complex ideas and distill them into a few words that stick with people.

For me, it’s a little different. I create the content I want to consume. Whether it’s a book I’m curious about, a conversation I want to have, or something I’m wrestling with personally in my Sunday Email, I’m usually trying to work through something myself.

Two different approaches to creating content, but both rooted in curiosity and a desire to share ideas worth thinking about.

Looking forward to sharing this special crossover episode on From the Green Notebook soon!

Thanks again to MANTECH and @ausaorg for making these conversations possible.

What does it take to be the best?

Sarah Blake Morgan caught up with the winners of the Best Squad Competition from the 75th Ranger Regiment at #AUSA2026.

What stood out wasn’t just their accomplishments, but their humility and genuine gratitude for the opportunity to represent the Regiment.

A great reminder that excellence and humility can go hand in hand.

🎙️ Field Notes from the Floor, presented by MANTECH and From the Green Notebook.

AUSA is going to look a little different this year.

From the Green Notebook is taking the podcast to the floor with Field Notes from the Floor.

I’ll be joined by Sarah Blake Morgan, an Emmy-nominated journalist, storyteller, Army veteran, and former guest on the podcast, as we move through the convention floor talking with leaders from across the Army.

We plan to capture the conversations, ideas, and lessons that usually happen between the formal panels and presentations.

We’ll be sharing short interviews and clips throughout the week from AUSA 2026.

Follow along.

To my news colleagues, Ashley Smith Flynn’s family will not be participating in any media interviews at this time.

Instead, they hope you will read the words that so beautifully describe the daughter, sister, mother and friend they tragically lost.

In an effort to give Ashley’s loved ones the space to heal and focus on her two beautiful girls, any further requests can be sent to my inbox as the Smith family’s acting media liaison. by @sbmstoryteller

We’re launching Field Notes from the Floor at the @ausaorg Annual Meeting, October 12–14 in Washington, D.C.

I’ll be there with @sbmstoryteller Sarah Blake Morgan, talking with leaders across the Army and capturing the stories, lessons, and ideas worth sharing.

We’re building out our interview schedule now. Unit PAOs and public affairs officers, if you have leaders or Soldiers whose stories should be told, reach out. We’ll be recording interviews from the floor and in dedicated spaces throughout the week.

We want to get beyond the talking points and highlight the people, leadership lessons, and stories happening across the Army.

Send me a DM if you’d like to get your unit on the schedule.

We spent the weekend celebrating you, Ruby Jean. There was banjo music and harmonies. I wore a skirt you made by hand decades ago and sang one of your favorite hymns. Everyone who loved you was there -
from the many chapters of life you lived - faithfully, creatively, and with endless heart. Grandma, we were so lucky to have you for so long.

There’s so much more I could say - but instead I’ll share a piece of her obituary I was so grateful to write.

Born into the humblest of beginnings on January 20, 1935, in Pillow, Pennsylvania, Ruby was the eldest of three siblings raised in Klingerstown, a place she always called “God’s Country.” She was the definition of a “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” always putting the needs of her beloved brother and sister ahead of her own. She walked herself to church on Sundays and carried that quiet leadership with her after graduating from Hegins Township High School in 1953 - steady, gracious, and unwavering.

Ruby lived many lives in one. She was a devoted U.S. Navy wife, preacher’s wife, mayor’s wife, and, later in life, a Navy mother; a Navy and Army grandmother; and a college graduate—proving it is never too late to pursue your dreams. She found particular joy in her years as a reading teacher, filling her classroom with books and delighting in every child she helped fall in love with reading for the first time.

Through every season, Ruby was first and foremost a faithful partner to her husband, Donald Ray Morgan, and a devoted mother to their four children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild - each of whom knew she loved them “a bushel and a peck.”
Ruby expressed love with her hands and her heart. She loved to cook, quilt, craft, and speak Pennsylvania Dutch with her brother Sonny. She had a remarkable gift for turning ordinary, well-worn things into treasures - Christmas ornaments made from Grandpa’s old shirts, hand-stitched stuffed bears named “Ruby” for each grandchild, and countless keepsakes meant to be cherished for generations. She believed memories should be made, saved, and shared.

We’ll miss you forever, RLM ♥️ taken in Carlisle, Pennsylvania by @sbmstoryteller

Here’s what the job hunt looks like when you’re still active-duty: rush home from Bragg, throw on the top half of a “professional Zoom outfit,” and hope nobody asks me to stand up during the interview 🙃

I’ve got a few irons in the fire right now and I’m saying yes to pretty much every conversation - because I *still* don’t know what I want civilian life to look like once my orders end at the end of September.

If you’ve got ideas for a storyteller with 13+ years of local, national and international reporting experience (and a serious affinity for pivoting) send them my way. I’m listening. taken in Southern Pines, North Carolina by @sbmstoryteller
