What happens when public information starts disappearing from the internet? And who is responsible for preserving it?
ㅤ
Join us on Wednesday, October 14, for “404: Evidence Not Found—The Challenge of Disappearing Federal Data & Dark Archives,” a timely discussion with Jason R. Baron, professor of the practice at the University of Maryland and former director of litigation at the National Archives and Records Administration.
ㅤ
As federal web pages and datasets are removed, altered, or made harder to access, Baron will explore the implications for research, public accountability, and the preservation of government records—and how technology, policy, and cross-disciplinary collaboration can help protect access to public information. Attend in person or via Zoom. A reception will follow the discussion beginning at 4 p.m.

I was proud to represent @astronautsforamerica at this great event. @umass is one of the first stops on our nation-wide college tour to encourage the students to vote.

Our mission is America.   Going to the polls is one small step for each of us— and one giant leap for our country!

The room was packed – the questions were many – candid conversations between two of our state lawmakers of different parties. It doesn’t get any better than that!   Three cheers for The Democracy Project!

Thank you to retired NASA astronauts @astro_cady and Linda Godwin, on behalf of @AstronautsForAmerica, and Massachusetts Senator @jocomerfordma (D) and Representative @reptoddmsmola (R) for attending @sbs_umass’s Democracy Project event this Constitution Day.

As the United States marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, it was an honor to hear from both people who left the planet and came back with something to say about living together, and local politicians working on governing across differences. #mapoli Chancellor Javier Reyes standing with Cady Coleman '91 PhD, a retired NASA astronaut and U.S. Air Force colonel. We’re celebrating the announcement of the new Future of Food Initiative at @umass, a transformational effort to address the pressing challenges facing global food systems.

The Future of Food Initiative will include a new 36,000 square foot research facility, a multidisciplinary collaborative research center, an endowed chair in food science and three endowed faculty positions who will examine crucial questions about the future of our global food system. It will be made possible with the support of generous donors, Paul and Diane Manning, through their family foundation; the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; UMass Amherst; and funds being raised by the UMass Amherst Foundation.

“Meeting the challenges facing our global food system requires scientific and technological breakthroughs, but it also requires understanding the economic and human decisions that determine whether those innovations succeed. UMass Amherst’s strength in economics, particularly resource economics, brings critical expertise in food markets, consumer behavior, environmental and natural resource economics, and public policy,” said R. Karl Rethemeyer, Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

“By bringing these perspectives together with expertise from across the University, the Future of Food Initiative can help turn innovation into solutions that are sustainable, economically viable, and capable of improving people’s lives.”
