Inside SANAA’s first building in Taiwan w/ @scalienn

Taichung Green Museumbrary is designed to look like “a library in a park, and a museum in a forest.” The layout divides the monumental complex into eight floating, interconnected pavilions that seamlessly weave the Taichung Art Museum and the Taichung Public Library together.

The site borders the sprawling greenery of Taichung Central Park. Wrapped in a lightweight, double-layer glass and aluminum mesh, this veil actively shields the interior from Taiwan’s intense subtropical sun (reducing indoor temperatures by over 4 degrees Celsius).

By elevating several of the blocks on pilotis, SANAA created an unbroken ground floor of shaded plazas and winding ramps that welcome visitors to drift effortlessly from nature directly into a world of books and art. taken in Taichung, Taiwan by @scalienn

How do you integrate large scale architecture directly into a coastline?

The Shenzhen Bay Culture Park by MAD Architects functions as a continuous piece of coastal topography. The design places the main exhibition halls underground, covering them with a green roof that maintains an unbroken public park.   The site lies on the East Asian Australasian Flyway. Its planting design prioritising native species to support migratory waterbirds, Creating a much needed pit stop for swallows and finches along their 5000 mile expedition.

Its architecture demonstrates how public infrastructure can physically merge with the natural environment. A sculptural intervention that supports both the urban population and its coastal ecosystem.

A hotel designed around an existing forest grove.

@vectorarchitects reimagined this former industrial site, transforming it into a hotel connected by timber cloisters that wrap around mature camphor trees.

Its exquisite material palette draws you in with incredible warmth and tactility. It feels like an extension of the historic vernacular of its kiln fired city. by @scalienn

Carbon fibre roofed monastery next to The Great Wall with @scalienn

In the valley below Jinshanling, where the Great Wall traces the landscape, Atelier Deshaus designed the Upper Cloister contemporary monastery. The building sits within the harsh topographical slope once carved by coal miners and terrace farmers. Within its stone courtyard five natural rocks are arranged to mark the five aggregates of Buddhist thought, the sky visible between thin steel columns hung from concrete walls. A gap in the far wall frames the Great Wall itself. by @scalienn

Found another sculptural, sound-first space in China. With @scalienn

The design concept treats the building as a musical instrument in itself, organized around sound, light, and air.

The program is arranged vertically. The lower level houses the Meditation Rotunda, a nine meter high space illuminated through fifty centimeter gaps at the wall corners. Above it sits the Skylight Music Hall, with a sunken stage that appears as a suspended disc when viewed from below.

Nine brass sound transmission tubes connect the two levels, carrying sound from the performance space down to the rotunda. A retractable circular roof opens the hall to the sky, and forty eight seats are arranged around the stage across two levels.

Designed by @vectorarchitects, this is the fourth architectural project completed within the Aranya Qinhuangdao community, following the Seashore Library, Seashore Chapel, and Restaurant y Sea.

Xiao Feng Art Gallery unfolds as one continuous calligraphic loop.

The architects mixed black ink directly into the concrete in honour of the artists medium. ZAO/Zhang Ke Architecture Office completed the building in 2025 at the foot of Daci Mountain, south of Hangzhou’s West Lake, as a tribute to the painters Xiao Feng and Song Ren. The result is a continuous loop curving around a central courtyard, narrowing and widening in a way that recalls the variable pressure of a brush moving across paper.

The courtyard draws on the tradition of the Chinese scholar’s garden, designed to be discovered gradually rather than taken in from one position. Walking the loop, visitors pass through narrow corridors that open into larger galleries, with ramps carrying the route between floor levels as ceiling heights shift along the way. At intervals, the path offers views across the courtyard to the cantilevered galleries on the far side, their glass fronts framing the forest beyond.

Void & mass with @askvivii

@neriandhu Design and Research Office, led by Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, completed the Aranya Art Centre in 2019 for the Golden Coast community in Qinhuangdao.

The building takes its place among the resort's cluster of cultural buildings, built from concrete with a mix of textures across the facade, with bronze details marking the entrance to each gallery. The facade is deliberate in its repetition, concrete panels in varying textures locking into a tight grid that reads as ordered and componential.

In direct contrast, at its core, a circular courtyard cuts straight through the building's mass, stepped down like an amphitheatre. The space can be filled with water and used as a reflecting pool, or left dry and used for performances, talks, and everyday gathering. Galleries wrap around this courtyard, so visitors moving between exhibits pass along its edge, spiralling upwards through different volumes.

A building in disguise. With @scalienn

The Chapel of Sound sits in a valley below the ruins of the Great Wall, its form taken from the surrounding rock.

@open.architecture designed the building as something closer to a geological formation than a conventional piece of construction. Its inverted cone shape is built from cantilevering bands of concrete mixed with crushed local rock, picking up the same tonal variation and roughness found in the valley’s exposed stone. The architects describe their approach as working without the logic of columns and beams, favouring a self supporting structure closer to a boulder settled into the landscape, touching the valley floor with the smallest footprint possible.

The acoustic design grew out of research into resonant cavities found in shells, wooden instruments, and the human ear. Software simulation guided the auditorium toward better sound quality, while small, irregular apertures cut into the walls absorb excess reverberation. With no heating or cooling, the building operates seasonally, closing through the coldest months and opening once the valley warms.
