Marathon debut 🥹

3:45:00 felt ambitious going into the block 6 months ago, so when I looked down and saw 3:26:00 as I was coming round the last bend I lost it 😭 hear me when I say this: you’re so much more capable than you give yourself credit for.

But that’s the less important stuff. Training for this marathon has made me a runner (wouldn’t run for a bus 2 years ago), it’s made me a lot tougher, and it’s introduced me to a whole world of people, opportunities and LIFE that I didn’t know existed.

So chase the hard stuff, that’s where life lies 🤍

Thank you to everyone who pushes me to places I didn’t think possible, you know who you are 🫂 and especially to my coach @_danbarratt_ I’ve never been happier with you than I am right now 😂 by @scarlyparkerr

I’ve been training for over 6 years. Here’s 6 things I’ve learnt.

1. You need to fuel your body properly to see results and function as a human. Anything less than 1600 is arguably barely enough to keep you alive, let alone see real progress. Work out your TDEE, eat at or slightly above it, and aim for ~2g protein per kg of body weight.

2. If your motivation comes from self hate, no amount of progress will ever feel enough. The goal isn’t to earn self worth through fitness, it’s to express it by showing up for yourself.

But remember, the “goals” you set yourself will constantly change, that’s not bad, it’s good to have high standards, just don’t rely your happiness on them.

3. “Toned” is the worst word in the world. What you actually mean is: A) you want fuller muscles. B) you want a low enough body fat % to see them. To do this, you need to follow a consistent program and track progressive overload in the gym while complimenting this with cardio.

Head to the 🔗 in my b!0 to learn more about 1:1 coaching opportunities with me to help with this.

4. Training is just as much mental as it is physical, stop setting mental limits for yourself and focus on what you’re doing. Train with intention over intensity always.

5. I don’t even look like half the photos I post most of the time because I’m not flexed and in perfect lighting most of the time. Follow people because they feed your mind and inspire you, not because you want to look like them. We’re not supposed to look the same.

6. During my first Hyrox training period, I found the amount of HIIT I was doing cost me my gut health. I’m still working to get this back a year later. Monitor your body for signs of stress and respond to them.

We are psychologically wired to compare.

But somewhere along the way that turned from a survival mechanism and tool for growth, into a self sabotaging tool of destruction that we often have little to no control over, it just happens in our mind.

So, if contrast is inescapable, why not use it to your advantage?

Upwards comparison identity: looking up to someone and/or being inspired by them.

Downwards comparison contrast: looking back on how far you’ve come and acknowledging your achievements.

Both of them involve comparison, but the kind that drives wellbeing and success rather than tearing away at the person you are.

Importantly, be careful of what you’re comparing yourself too. Most of it isn’t real.

Your mind, your choice :)

Babes the point of your lower body isn’t to “look like a capital P”

If you want to work with a coach that cares about this stuff (because they all should), head to the 🔗 in my b!0 to apply for 1:1 coaching.

It’s to walk, run, and be able to get out of a seat when you’re 85. A lot of you aren’t thinking about that last one yet though.

Right now I know chasing the aesthetics goals are all that matter, but in a few years you will wish you didn’t spend so much time hip thrusting 4x your body weight, because now you’re seeing a physio for hip flexor issues instead of chasing your children around.

Instead, here are 4 of my staples for leg day, prioritising power and strength to compliment my running training and ensure my lower body can support me well into my old age:

Wearing @aybl new “Enhance” collection in Cobalt blue, XS (code SCARLY to save you and support me 💙)

1. Squats
Build full leg and core strength while reinforcing the ability to sit, stand, and move load safely for life.

2. Power Step Ups
Develop single leg strength, balance, and power that transfers directly to running and real world movement.

3. Sled Push
Build leg drive and conditioning with minimal joint stress, making them ideal for strength without wear and tear.

4. Walking Lunges
Train strength through motion, improving coordination, hip stability, and resilience while moving.

Not to be ignored: Stretching restores tissue length. Activation primes the muscles that protect your joints.

How to go from strong to strong AND fit.

Something I’ve noticed is a lot of people are prioritising strength with no consideration for their cardiovascular system which is incredibly important not just for things like heart health but cognitive function.

If you’re completely new to running, this is a great way to get started.

I emphasise the JOG on purpose as I also notice when people start out, they go way too fast. Thinking of this as a “jog” can be a good mental cue to keep you at the right effort level. As you progress, you can start to push speed later.

Remember this is just a guide. If 2 minutes is too much for you at the start, meet yourself where you’re at and try 1:2 etc.

Beginner tip:
Eat an easy to digest, high carb snack 30 minutes before your run. Running is a lot more demanding that strength training and without enough glycogen stores you WILL feel like 💩 examples: banana and honey, pikelet and jam, rice cake and honey.

This session is GOAT for developing your fitness and is easily repeatable and modifiable week to week as your fitness increases.

Progressive overload looks like:
- quicker paces
- shorter rest times
- more repeats

Remember your body is only as capable as the mind that believes in it so train and think accordingly.
