Kari It was scary but nice meeting Kari at Midsummer Scream @midsummerscream, an event at the Long Beach Convention Center dedicated to fans of horror. “I’m originally from the Bay Area, but I’ve lived in SoCal for over 20 years now. I recently moved to Riverside, CA, where I’m raising my two young kids, who also love to cosplay and enjoy the spooky life. “I have my own clothing company, Warlord Clothing, where we create nostalgic horror and pop-culture graphics for shirts. I’m also a self-taught seamstress and make dresses and custom punk clothing. I’ve always done my own hair and created my own loud, colorful style — DIY has always been a huge part of who I am. “I’m also a cosplayer! I created a fun ’80s-inspired zombie character I dubbed Zombie Lauper, and at comic cons I love transforming into Ursula the Sea Witch. If I’m not creating outfits or costumes, you can usually find me at a punk show, whether it’s local or somewhere across the world. I’m very well traveled, and some of my favorite places I’ve been are Tokyo, Ireland, and Mexico City, just to name a few. “I believe this is my 8th year at Midsummer! I’ve had my brand here since close to the beginning, and I feel very lucky to be a part of it. We all share a passion for horror, and these are my people. I’ve made lifelong friends here. The haunts and shopping are absolutely great, but what I love most is the people. We’re all just crazy kids with a spooky love that’s to DIE for. “I’m obsessed with ’80s neon — anything and everything bright and obnoxiously colorful. For my makeup, I wanted it to look like neon laser lights were shooting out of my eyes and straight into my mohawk, tying the whole look together. “I make all of my own clothing from scratch, and I made this outfit especially for Midsummer. I’m definitely hard to miss because with my rainbow mohawk and green platforms, I stand well over 6 feet tall! From cut ✂️ to chaos — 5: Concert Edition *Whoops this one is 5 reels says 4 🫢 Decided I needed a shirt literally minutes before we had to leave to Iron Maiden. Pulled an old burnt, double-sided Iron Maiden shirt out of the scrap pile, cut it up, sewed it back together and somehow made it out the door. The skirt was handmade too, using fabric I already had sitting around.
