Cecilia Ursula “Petie” Cavendish (1942-2026). I always loved this picture of my parents. November 23, 1962. Mom was a 20-year old secretary working in West Memphis when she met my father, a salesman. They hit it off and were married within a short time (against my grandfather’s wishes – dad, scandalously, was a divorced man). The two of them were inseparable. When Dad died almost two years ago, Mom was ready to go, too. On Saturday, her body finally caught up with her wishes and she passed away peacefully, her sister by her side holding her hand.

My mother was a tough bird who could out-cuss a sailor but would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. She had a wicked sense of humor and one of my fondest memories is seeing Blazing Saddles with her as a kid and watching her doubled over crying at the campfire scene (you know, the one with all the farting).

A scratch cook like her grandmother, trips home meant the best southern fare: squash casserole, green beans slow cooked in bacon fat, a big ham with marmalade coating and a yellow pound cake with ice cream for dessert. She loved a big meal with friends and family and my childhood was full of them.

Age isn’t always kind and Parkinson’s and other ailments had long ago robbed her of the things that brought her joy: tending to her garden, cooking for others, rummaging through antique booths and estate sales to find just one more chair (she had a weakness for chairs; when my father grumbled about her bringing home another chair, she smiled and leaned over to Jen and said, “he doesn’t know about the other thirty above the garage.”)

Death is cruel. It’s also merciful. And now she and Dad are together again. by @scavendish
